Veteran accountant Jerry Miller evolves with time, technology - The ...

Now semi-retired from accounting, Jerry Miller remains busy during the tax season at his office in Spokane?Valley.

When does a person decide to become an?accountant?

When he realizes he doesn?t have enough charisma to be an?undertaker.

What does an accountant?s wife do when she can?t fall?asleep?

Asks her husband, ?What did you do at work today,?honey??

In the past 40 years, everything about accounting has evolved ? well, except for the self-deprecating jokes accountants tell each?other.

Accountant Jerry Miller graduated from Eastern Washington University in the 1970s. After five and a half years with the IRS, he opened his own practice in the Spokane Valley and twice served as president of the Washington Association of Accountants. Miller is an ?enrolled agent,? meaning he has passed IRS tests covering all aspects of taxation, and also passed an IRS background?check.

He sold his practice in 2007, but still prepares taxes for loyal clients who have been with him more than 30?years.

Miller discussed how technology has changed accounting, and shared tax advice during a recent?interview.

S-R: Are accountants as boring as most people?assume?

Miller: Obviously there are some who fit the stereotype. But accounting is like most professions ? you have to have people skills to be?successful.

S-R: How about the job?itself?

Miller: Actually, it?s quite interesting. And there are lots of different career options. You can work with one company?s books and records ? that?s private accounting. Or you can work for a government agency, like the IRS or an auditor?s office. Or you can go into public accounting, where you deal with financial statements and tax returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships and?trusts.

S-R: Which route did you?take?

Miller: When I graduated from Eastern, I went to work for the Corps of Engineers in Seattle. Now there was a job I was really bored at. So I left after nine months, got a job with the?IRS.

S-R: What was that?like?

Miller: Very interesting. That?s where I learned about taxes and got to see a lot of different businesses. But then I was transferred from Seattle to Spokane, and there wasn?t a lot of variety ? mostly farmers, which was pretty routine. In 1980, I learned about a guy who wanted to sell his practice, and I bought?it.

S-R: What did that practice focus?on?

Miller: Small businesses and individuals ? tax returns, financial statements and some payroll. At one time we had three accountants and about 500?clients.

S-R: Were you good at math as a?youngster?

Miller: Yes, I always enjoyed it, and had a great math teacher at North Central ? Mr. Exley. I started out in college thinking I would be a high-school math teacher, but the calculus was getting over my head. A counselor suggested I try accounting, and I fell in love with?it.

S-R: After graduating, did you become a certified public?accountant?

Miller: Nope. I sat for the exam a couple of times, but couldn?t pass the whole thing. And I found that I was able to practice my profession without getting certified. Basically, the license allows you to do auditing, and I didn?t care to get into that because I enjoyed taxes so?much.

S-R: When you went from the IRS to public accounting, was that like switching?teams?

Miller: To some degree. You?re looking at returns from the taxpayer?s standpoint. But I?m not going to put down just anything a client tells me. I follow ethics, rules and guidelines, and I can?t compromise?those.

S-R: Did your years with the IRS give you an advantage over other?accountants?

Miller: Possibly a little, just from knowing the best way to present information on tax returns. For example, if you lump a whole bunch of expenses under one category, it might attract IRS attention. If you spread them out among the individual categories where they belong, they?re less likely to be questioned. But that?s just common?sense.

S-R: How has technology changed the?industry?

Miller: When I first started, we used to prepare tax returns by hand. And we always did them in pencil, because often we?d get toward the end and the client would bring in another piece of information that would change three or four different numbers. We did a lot of?erasing.

S-R: When did you start using?computers?

Miller: I think that was in the 1983 tax season. My first one cost me $10,000 and had very little memory. But it didn?t take long to realize their worth. Suddenly I could change one number, and the computer adjusted all the?others.

S-R: Any downside to?computers?

Miller: One negative consequence has been that they?ve allowed tax laws to become very, very complicated. Today you can hardly prepare a return by hand unless it?s an EZ form with almost nothing on?it.

S-R: Have computers and software made it easier for people to prepare their own?taxes?

Miller: Yes, but you know the old saying: garbage in, garbage out. One of the biggest problems occurs with earned-income credit and child tax credit. Some of it is intentional fraud, but also it?s because the IRS definition of a child is not necessarily the same as the average lay person?s, which can lead to incorrect?returns.

S-R: When you first became an accountant, were you proud of your?profession?

Miller: Oh,?definitely.

S-R: How did you feel after the accounting scandals at Enron, WorldCom and?Nortel?

Miller: It was very depressing. The profession has gone from being principle-based to rules-based. Some accountants think if there isn?t a rule against something, then you can do it. Principle-based means that even if there isn?t a rule against something, if you know in your heart it?s wrong, you don?t do?it.

S-R: There?s debate about whether to teach ethics in college accounting programs. Did any of your courses deal with?ethics?

Miller: Some touched on it, but there wasn?t a separate class on?it.

S-R: Should there?be?

Miller: I definitely think there should be more emphasis on ethics. But it really boils down to getting back to principle-based accounting. One of the most common principles of accounting used to be conservativism ? you were supposed to be conservative in your estimates, as opposed to being aggressive. Even that principle has gone by the wayside, in my?opinion.

S-R: What do you like most about your?job?

Miller: I get to meet a lot of different people. Your clients become your friends, so every year is an opportunity to catch up with people and help them. I have clients who moved to other states who still send me their stuff every?year.

S-R: What do you like?least?

Miller: When I had my practice, what I liked least was managing people and?billing.

S-R: Do you remember really long work weeks before you?semi-retired?

Miller: Oh, yeah. When I was building my practice, I was here from eight in the morning until midnight four days a week during tax season. I?d usually work eight hours on Friday and Saturday, and take Sunday off. Some accountants don?t even take Sunday off during tax?season.

S-R: Is there any general advice you offer clients regarding tax?returns?

Miller: The IRS wants you to keep good records for three years. You can?t just be writing things down on napkins. If you?re keeping lousy records and you?re audited, they?re more likely to spend time trying to verify items on your?return.

S-R: What?s the job outlook for?accountants?

Miller: Every business has to have them, so I think the future is?great.

S-R: What sort of personality is best suited for an accounting?career?

Miller: You need to enjoy working with numbers and with people. And you need to be flexible, because everyone does things?differently.

S-R: What advice would you offer someone considering an accounting?career?

Miller: Take some accounting classes to see if you enjoy the work, and get an internship in an accounting firm or a company?s accounting department. Too often people go through four years of school in a certain field, only to get out in the real work and find out they hate it. When I was in college, I worked for the internal auditor at Eastern, which helped confirm that this was the field for?me.

S-R: One last question: How can you tell which accountants are?extroverts?

Miller: How?

S-R: When they talk to you, they look at your shoes instead of their?own.

Miller: Ha-ha. That?s pretty good. I?ll have to remember?that.

Oscars 2013 Wrap-Up: 7 Missed Opportunities

By Drew Taylor By and large, Sunday's Oscar telecast was amiable, inoffensive entertainment and not, like last year, a flaming heap of twisted WTF. Seth McFarlane proved to be a toothy, totally game host, and there were enough oddball surprises both in terms of the winners (say what, two-time Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz?) and [...]

Mozilla, AT&T And Ericsson Team Up To Demo Seamless Web-To-Mobile WebRTC Integration At MWC

webrtc_drawingWhat if your browser could know when you are getting a call on your mobile phone? Earlier this month, Google and Mozilla demonstrated how their browsers’ WebRTC implementations could interoperate. Today, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Mozilla is going a step further. The organization has teamed up with AT&T and Ericsson to show a proof-of-concept called WebPhone that demonstrates how its Firefox browser can use Mozilla’s Social API, AT&T’s API Platform and Ericsson’s Web Communication Gateway to let Firefox users sync with a user’s existing phone number and provide calling services without the need to install any plugins or special apps. WebPhone, which isn’t currently available to the public, demonstrates how users can receive calls and text on their desktop. The system was built on top of WebRTC, the developing standard that allows for in-browser file transfers and real-time video, audio and text chats without plugins. According to Mozilla, this demo shows “how consumers can easily take and receive video calls from their mobile phones or desktop browser using WebRTC or share their web experiences with friends or family who might be on a desktop PC or mobile phone across the other side of the world.” The demo shows how users can start a call from their Firefox browser. Using the operators’ APIs, the web application in the browser gets access to the user’s contacts on the phone and could eventually allow them to, for example, start calls on their mobile device and then transfer them to their desktop once they get home and receive calls right through their browser. ?We believe there is value for operators bundling mobile and fixed broadband offerings with browsers, and Firefox will be the first browser to give them this opportunity,” Magnus Furustam, Vice President Product Area Core and IMS, Business Unit Networks at Ericsson said in a statement today. “The open source project with Mozilla means operators can contribute resources to the project and in a new way, jointly collaborating with other innovators to shape the future of web communications.? We will likely hear quite a bit more about WebRTC as this year’s Mobile World Congress gets underway. The standard is now stable enough that developers can feel relatively confident that most browser vendors will support it in their stable release versions relatively soon (with the exception of Microsoft, which is backing a different version of the standard). Like all standards,

Facebook Building 'Cold Storage' Data Centers for Old Photos

Facebook Logo

All those photos that you posted to Facebook a few years back are fun to revisit every now and then, right? But chances are you probably don't look at them every day.

With more than 240 billion user photos taking up space on Facebook's servers, and another 350 million uploaded every day, the social network is now taking action to more efficiently store and manage photos that aren't in heavy rotation. According to a report from The Oregonian, Facebook is gearing up to launch three new "cold storage" data centers in Prineville, Ore. to store these older and rarely viewed images.

Unlike its traditional "hot servers," which are always on and ready to deliver data, the servers at these cold storage facilities will be asleep, awaiting a request for old material. There are a number of benefits to this approach. For starters, the cold-storage data centers will cost a third less than a standard data center.

Plus, while the facility itself will be smaller than a live data center, each rack of servers has eight times more storage, and is five times more energy efficient. Facebook already has two massive data centers in Prineville, which together used 71 million kilowatts of power in nine months ? equivalent to the consumption of roughly 6,000 homes.

It will, however, take a bit longer than normal to access these older photos. But Facebook said most users won't notice the delay. ?

"The principle will be so that it doesn't impact the user experience ? so think about a matter of seconds, or milliseconds," Michael Kirkland, a Facebook communication manager, told The Oregonian.

Facebook is aiming to have the first of three facilities operational by fall. Each of the 16,000 square-foot data centers will be able to hold an Exabyte of data, or about one million PC hard drives.

Sony Responds to Free PlayStation Store Credits Found in Inboxes

Published on 02-23-2013 05:57 PM

Some of you were lucky enough to check your messages on PSN the other day, only to find $10 PSN Points voucher waiting for you. We had originally posted the news as the points were being spotted, attached to a message from Sony, on Tuesday, February 19th.

My original post stated:

My husband checked his messages on our PlayStation 3 and found a message that included a $10 voucher that is good for use in the PlayStation Store. The message thanked him for being a loyal customer and fan of the PlayStation Network and goes on to offer a token of appreciation.

I'm not too sure if these are randomly generated because both my husband and myself have had PlayStation Plus for the same amount of time and he received one, while I didn't. However, I would recommend running to check your messages to see if you have one waiting for you! It could also be that they are sent in waves, but I'm not entirely sure on that.

Since then, we have had numerous asking them how it is determined on who receives these vouchers. I reached out to Sony and to end the head scratching. I received a response from a Sony representative who works on the PSN side of the account:

Thanks for reaching out. While we don't disclose the exact criteria used, we can say that select active PSN users were chosen to receive an XMB message that included a credit for their SEN Wallet as part of this special promotion.

Unfortunately, we will not find out how those selected were chosen. However, those who were, enjoy your points because, as I pointed out previously, not only do they reward PlayStation Plus members with free games and great discounts, but now a $10 voucher for the PlayStation Store? That's above and beyond for me, considering we've only had the service for two years. On the other hand, we've had Xbox LIVE, since it launched and even converted it to a family plan, and the only thing that we can say that we have gotten nothing but the online service we pay for. I take it back, we did get an avatar helmet thanking us for our payments over a ten year span.

New more effective treatment option for breast cancer patients approved by FDA

Feb. 22, 2013 ? Patients with HER2-positive breast cancer, a particularly aggressive form of breast cancer, now have a new, effective and less toxic therapeutic option.

On Friday, Feb., 22, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the new treatment drug, Kadcyla (trastuzumab emtansine), also known as TDM-1, which combines Traztuzumab, also called Herceptin, with the powerful chemotherapy drug emtansine.

The drug therapy is developed by Roche-owned Genentech, which funded the study.

Results from clinical trials of the drug TDM-1, known as "Super Herceptin," showed that it was more effective and less toxic than the standard regimen for this type of tumor. The medication kept patients free of disease for longer than the standard chemotherapy regimen.

Rush was one of only two medical centers in Illinois and a small number across the country studying the treatment.

HER-2 positive breast cancer patients have been found to be positive for carrying a protein that promotes the growth of cancer cells. TDM-1 is taken directly to cells that have the HER2 protein on the membrane, such as the cancer cells, while sparing normal cells. This results in less toxicity from the chemotherapy drug.

"TDM-1 works like the original drug Herceptin by hunting down and interfering with the cancer cells," said Dr. Melody Cobleigh, Director of the Comprehensive Breast Center at Rush and lead investigator of the TDM-1 clinical trials at Rush. "But this newer version, called TDM-1, is Herceptin with a chemotherapy drug attached. The combination delivers a one-two punch, seeking out the cancer cells and not only stopping growth but delivering the chemo right to the cell."

"The tumor cell basically eats the TDM-1 and then, the TDM-1 gets released and destroys the tumor cell from the inside out," said Cobleigh.

"The best part for patients is that it is very tolerable and does not have the debilitating side effects characteristic of other cancer drugs," said Cobleigh.

With TDM-1, patients did not even lose their hair and experienced far fewer other side effects.

"This really can have an impact on patient's lives," said Cobleigh.

About 1,000 patients with HER-2 positive breast cancer were enrolled in the Phase III, randomized, multicenter, trial of TDM-1. One group of patients received TDM-1 and the other group received two standard chemotherapy drugs. The TDM-1 patients remained cancer-free for 9.6 months -- progression-free survival -- while the standard treatment group was cancer-free for 6.4 months. Progression-free survival is the time that elapses between the start of a treatment and the time the cancer gets worse.

"This therapy has shown to be effective when other standards treatments have stopped working," said Cobleigh. "For men and women, the treatment gave them the opportunity to lead normal lives."

For more information about the drug therapy being offered at Rush, please contact the Rush Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center at (312) 563-2325.

Video: Controversy over giant panda conservation

>>> giant pandas are one of the world's most high-profile endangered species even though it might sound shocking. there are now critics who are asking whether efforts to save the adorable bears are really worth the money and effort. here's more.

>> reporter: it's easy to see why pandas are the poster bears of the conservation movement . they're cute.

>> they're very cute. they're incredibly cute.

>> reporter: sarah becsal, a conservationist, has been working in china at the research base of giant panda breeding for 13 years.

>> i think that infantile appearance engenders us to want to protect, protect, protect.

>> reporter: with so few pandas left in the wild, scientists have been breeding pandas in captivity with the home of one day setting them free. a high-tech, expensive operation. female pandas are anesthetized and artificially inseminated. here's the result -- these cubs are just four months old they're so cute and so little. we were allowed to go into the nursery and watch them sleeping, eating, and learning how to walk. it's almost become like an industry. you know, trying to make as many pandas as possible.

>> i would say that that's a fair way to explain it.

>> reporter: an industry dedicated to saving the panda. what could be wrong with that?

>> i think that pouring millions and millions of dollars into one species of albeit incredibly cute animal is salacious.

>> reporter: a wildlife expert for the bbc is one of a small but growing number of critics that think with so many species going extinct it makes no sense to spend so much money trying to save just one.

>> i don't want the panda to be extinct. but ultimately, let's not waste vast amounts of money trying to prevent it when we could use that money far more efficiently, far more optimally somewhere else.

>> reporter: he says all the pandas china's breeding will likely spend their lives in zoos, including zoos here in america, since china's industrial growth has left little space for them in the wild. and to have them as a zoo animal, to have them only living in captivity --

>> no point.

>> reporter: sarah doesn't believe that saving the panda even in the wild is a lost cause.

>> if we truly cannot save space for giant padas, how could -- pandas, how could we have hope for others if we can't save the one that we profess to love the most?

>> reporter: scientists are doing everything they can to save this icon of wildlife conservation . for "today," kate snow , china.

Analysis: Italian firms innovate to fight recession

MILAN (Reuters) - Bioplastics group Mossi & Ghisolfi has hired 50 people a year for the last five years - not bad when Italy's unemployment has risen steadily to a 13-year high above 11 percent.

Now a world leader in its field, the Piedmont-based firm is so specialized that, to meet booming demand, it is even wooing home talented emigrants ready to take jobs at much lower pay than they could earn in Germany or the United States.

"Our business is all about technology and research. Italy is trying to compete with Vietnam on costs. That won't work. But Italy is the Vietnam of research. Our researchers are cheap, and that's the way forward," says group CEO Guido Ghisolfi.

The $3 billion-sales multinational, which boasts among its customers Coca-Cola, Danone, Nestle and Cadbury Schweppes, is an example of one of Italy's hidden strengths - companies that thrive by focusing on technology, innovation and exports.

Italy's next government must nurture such firms in a shrinking economy where domestic consumption is depressed by tax hikes and spending cuts aimed at reducing the budget deficit.

Caught in its longest recession for two decades, Italy's industrial production is around 25 percent below 2008 levels.

According to chamber of commerce association Unioncamere, around 1,000 Italian firms a day closed in 2012. Some fear that a weak government after this weekend's elections will shy away from the difficult reforms needed to make Italy competitive.

ITALY'S OTHER STORY

But if the headline data makes dismal reading it doesn't tell the whole story.

Clusters of medium-sized firms in engineering, packaging, fashion, food and ceramics are a reminder that Italy is still Europe's second-largest manufacturer - though few of these are located in the country's chronically depressed south.

According to the Trade Performance Index drawn up by UNCTAD/WTO on the basis of indicators such as net exports, world export share and product diversification, Italy is the most competitive exporter after Germany at the world level.

It had a trade surplus for manufactured goods of 94 billion euros in 2012.

"It's not true Italy is not competitive," says Marco Fortis, who teaches industrial economics at Milan Cattolica University, noting that its feeble growth is due largely to a 20-year process of deleveraging in public finances and rising taxes.

"The Chinese can do the simple stuff better but 'Made in Italy' is flourishing on high value-added products. Success lies in tailor-fitting production to client needs, not mass production," he says.

For companies in the buoyant fashion and machinery sectors it is factors like brand strength, market presence and post-sales service that are telling, not prices.

Bologna-based IMA , world leader in machines that package pharmaceuticals and make tea-bags for companies like Twinings, has seen its sales grow in recent years as it uses its technological know-how to branch out into new sectors.

"Moving forward we intend to use our innovative DNA to pay more attention to non-pharmaceutical business such as food," CEO and Chairman Alberto Vacchi said.

SCOUTING THE WORLD

IMA, like the world's biggest airport retailer Autogrill , has placed private bonds in the United States - proof that despite chaotic politics and corruption scandals investors are not completely shunning the euro zone's No. 3 economy.

Some companies are scouting the world for innovation.

Biomedical group Sorin , a world leader in cardiovascular disease that makes cutting-edge technology for open-heart surgery, is combing world markets for start-ups that will complement its product portfolio.

"We are snapping up ideas and technologies worldwide by buying into start-ups," Sorin chairman Rosario Bifulco said.

Fiamm, Italy's biggest battery maker with factories across the world, is reopening its historical site in north Italy and hiring more workers after developing a new sodium nickel battery which it said opened up a new client base.

Fiamm, like most of Italy's success stories, exports some 75 percent of its production to offset flaccid domestic demand.

Interpump , whose high-pressure water pumps can cut through steel, currently exports 87 percent of output.

"Internationalisation is a must. Our domestic orders portfolio has been halved as clients start to feel the pressure of the crisis and liquidity," CEO Fulvio Montipo said.

Types of home improvements

London, United Kingdom (prHWY.com) February 22, 2013 - The process of renovating homes is a long one that is done either gradually or at once. Most home improvements are carried out by people who have purchased an old house and want to make it better or people who are tired of having the same appearance of their homes and want a new look. Home remodeling is therefore the process of making additions and adjustments to a home. Remodeling of homes is done differently in different states. Home Remodeling Michigan helps the residents of Michigan to renovate their homes. A kitchen is a very important part of the house in Michigan and therefore Kitchen Remodel Michigan offers ways of renovating kitchens.

Home improvements can be done by building new structures to a home that is already in existence or it can be done by making improvements of existing facilities or example improving the lawn of the home, or the gardens and outdoor structures. It can also be done by doing repair and servicing to structures and facets in the home. One type of home improvement is the remodeling of a home for comfort purposes. Campus Rec: Intramural Sports - Admissions Blog

Post by Jimmy Schiemann

Every time I had to opportunity to I participated in extracurricular activities. Probably my favorite has always been sports, and at NC State I was able to keep playing on a more or less competitive level: Intramural sports.

Intramural sports are basically free tournaments that enrolled students (and faculty) can participate in. My past experience is basically soccer, but there are other choices, like flag football, softball, basketball and others.

Playing this is a lot of fun, as you can build a team with your friends, roommates, neighbors and even classmates (why not?). During my first semester at NC State I made many friends by playing intramural sports. Some student organizations have their own teams that you can join too, which makes such groups the more interesting to join.

This semester, campus recreation read my mind and introduced indoor soccer. My dreams came true.

Indoor Soccer is perfect for this time of the year, where it is usually cold, or it rains and thus forcing outdoor activities to move indoors. As soon as I found out that Indoor Soccer would be added as an intramural sport I gathered my friends and formed not one, but two teams (my original 11v11 team, but since indoor only has 5v5 we had to split the group in two).

Our first match was this Monday night. It was a great victory, 7 to 0.

My Indoor Soccer team this season

Campus Recreation at NC State does a phenomenal job in preparing intramural tournaments for all students interested. They provide referees, equipment etc.

As a student, do not miss out on the opportunity of participating in an intramural sport. Even if you do not have a team, you can always register yourself as a free agent and join a team.

For more information about what options you have as a student at NC State please visit Campus Recreation.

GOP opens 2013 with money advantage over Democrats

The Republican National Committee is starting 2013 with a financial advantage over its Democratic rivals.

The RNC raised $6.9 million in January and ended the month with $7.1 million in cash - along with no debt.

The Democratic National Committee brought in $4.3 million in January and ended the month with $4.7 million in cash.

But the DNC is carrying a large debt of $20.7 million, down slightly from the end of the year. Democrats racked up the debt while helping President Barack Obama hold onto the White House.

Party committees filed monthly financial reports Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission.

Fake horse racing blog dodges Italy's election polls blackout

ROME (Reuters) - Which horse are you backing in the Italian election?

A blog appears to have found a way around a publishing ban on polls in the two weeks before the vote by writing up the results of pretend "underground horse races", which appear to reflect each party's standing.

During the blackout period, pollsters continue to conduct surveys for their clients but are banned from publishing their findings in case they influence the vote on February 24-25.

But as in the last French presidential election, when people outside France used transparent parody names on Twitter to reveal the results of exit polls that could not be published at home, the Internet is proving more difficult to control.

On the final day polls could be published before the blackout fell, bloggers Andrea Mancia and Simone Bressan posted "The illegal races return!" on their site Notapolitica.it setting out the main "stables" and "jockeys" competing.

In line with the last published official polls, the winning horses of Tuesday's "San Nicola Racetrack" came from the "Bien Comun" stables, a thinly disguised name for the centre-left "Italia Bene Comune" coalition.

The centre right of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was shown coming in just 3.5 "seconds" behind.

The veracity of the race results indicating the pollsters' surveys cannot be established.

Michele di Lollo, an editor of notapolitica.it, denied the races reflected the results of real political polls.

"It's just a game," di Lollo told Reuters. "But everyone can interpret it as they want, if you know what I mean."

Using a mix of puns and French, Notapolitica.it renders centre-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani as jockey "Pier le Smacchiateur" and Mario Monti as "Mario de la Montaigne". Berlusconi is dubbed "Burlesque".

Horses representing Beppe Grillo's 5-Star Movement are referred to as "stellar", while the names of races allude to different pollsters. "San Walter Giuliano Racecourse", for example, appears to refer to research group SWG.

CARDINAL NUMBERS

Another blog, YouTrend.it, took advantage of the resignation of Pope Benedict to publish polls purportedly reflecting currents in the papal conclave to elect the next pontiff, but with non-existent cardinals who closely resemble key politicians.

Pitting conservative and liberal factions of imaginary cardinals against each other, YouTrend.it on Monday revealed that the "progressive front" in the conclave was several points ahead of the Vatican's right-leaning faction.

On the blog, "The Cardinal of Monza and Brianza" refers to the region where Berlusconi has his stately home, Arcore, site of the notorious "bunga bunga" parties alleged by TV starlets.

Bersani ally Nichi Vendola, famous for a diamond hoop earring in his left ear, is dubbed "the bejewelled archbishop", while Sicilian anti-mafia prosecutor Antonio Ingroia is "the grand inquisitor of the Sacred Office of Palermo".

It put the "five-starred chamberlain of Genoa", a clear reference to Grillo, as the third largest group, several points ahead of an "austere Milanese cardinal" who would suggest Monti.

It is a sign of how the Internet is shaking up a political landscape once dominated by television and publishing mogul Berlusconi, whose four terms as prime minister were often linked by observers to his formidable media power.

The 5-Star Movement has become the country's third biggest party while shunning mainstream media interviews and relying on blogging power and local meet ups, while instant factchecking on Twitter became a minor craze during pre-electoral debates.

But the ban on the media publishing polls remains and anyone found to have broken it during the blackout faces a maximum fine of 250,000 euro ($333,800), according to media regulator Agcom.

"Those treating it ironically like us aren't breaking the law, but if someone published the polls as polls they would get investigated and maybe fined," YouTrend.it editor Lorenzo Pregliasco told Reuters. He also denied the polls were real but added "those who understand, understand".

Only with the publication of the first official exit poll in a week's time will Italians know for sure which jockey, as it were, is to finish first in the race. ($1 = 0.7490 euros)

Highly flexible organic semiconductors: Research paves way for thin-sheet plastic displays or wearable electronics

Feb. 15, 2013 ? Organic semiconductors hold promise for making low-cost flexible electronics -- conceivably video displays that bend like book pages or roll and unroll like posters, or wearable circuitry sewn into uniforms or athletic wear. Researchers have demonstrated the ability to "print" transistors made of organic crystals on flexible plastic sheets, using technology that resembles inkjet or gravure printing.

However, for the technology's potential to be realized, scientists have to show that these organic semiconductors will withstand the rugged handling they invite -- they will need to perform reliably in spite of frequent flexing and sharp bending.

In an article published Dec. 11, 2012 in Nature Communications, scientists led by Rutgers University physicist Vitaly Podzorov report they have demonstrated extremely flexible organic semiconductors that withstood multiple bending cycles in which the devices were rolled to a radius as small as 200 micrometers. The scientists worked with numerous crystalline devices they made and found no degradation in their performance.

Podzorov claims his is the first rigorous study of solution-crystallized organic semiconductors under various types of strain -- sharp bending and repeated flexing along with compression and stretching. He acknowledges some earlier encouraging studies of mechanical robustness, but felt those lacked rigorous tests of flexibility involving different types of organic semiconductors, especially those that show the most promise for development of low-cost printed electronics. The scientists at Rutgers focused on two soluble small molecules (developed in the group of Prof. John Anthony at the University of Kentucky), depositing and crystallizing them on thin plastic sheets from solution, and claim the results should apply to numerous other organic formulations that researchers are investigating.

Penn State THON 2013 Dance Marathon Raises Funds To Fight Pediatric Cancer (PHOTOS, TWEETS)

Penn State students hit the dance floor on Friday night for 46 hours of breakin' it down to raise funds to fight pediatric cancer.

The oldest and longest dance marathon in the county, the university?s THON event has collected more than $89 million for the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children?s Hospital since 1977, according to the organization?s website. The charity helps families battling pediatric cancers pay for the the care and treatment that insurance doesn?t cover.

The chatter on Twitter points to the fact that students are making a weekend of it and the turnout has been pretty impressive:

Last year, more than 700 dancers showed off their moves at the charity event and raised $10.7. million, according to the Centre Daily Times. It was the first year that THON was held without legendary coach Joe Paterno in attendance and his son, Jay, shared some words of inspiration at the event.

?When the storm clouds gathered around this campus in November, a lot of people ran for the hills. Not the students, who were leaders of Thon. You stood your ground,? Jay Paterno said at the event, according to the Centre Daily Times. ?Thon represents the very best of Penn State students, he added, ?their compassion and their character.?

Office 2013 Tied to One?and Only One?Computer | Millennium ...

What would you do if your computer died and you had to purchase a new one and reinstall all of your old applications? Up to now, your only cost would be for the new computer?and probably someone to reinstall all of the software you had previously, legitimately purchased.

Microsoft has just changed that. In this article at ComputerWorld, it has been revealed that current versions of Office 2013 are permanently and irrevocably tied to the first computer on which you install it. Even if that computer dies, you can never reinstall Office 2013 on another computer. You must purchase another license in order to install Office 2013 on any other computer you already own or purchase new.

Wall Street dips but S&P on pace for seventh weekly gain

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks edged lower on Friday as equities continued a phase of consolidation after a strong start to the year but the seven-week winning streak for the S&P 500 remained intact.

The S&P 500, up nearly 7 percent so far this year, is facing strong technical resistance near the 1,525 level. But investors, expecting the index to advance further in the quarter, have held back from locking in profits.

"It looks like a little bit of profit taking, normal consolidation after a big run and maybe we might be seeing the first signs of nervousness ahead of the sequestration debate that will most likely starting up when Congress comes back," said Fred Dickson, chief market strategist at D.A. Davidson & Co in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

The "sequestration" - automatic across-the-board spending cuts put in place as part of a larger congressional budget fight - are due to kick in March 1 unless lawmakers agree to an alternative.

Data released Friday illustrated the bumpy road the U.S. economic recovery continues to take.

The New York Federal Reserve said manufacturing in New York state expanded for the first time in seven months, while Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's preliminary reading of consumer sentiment rose from the prior month and beat expectations.

But U.S. manufacturing fell in January after a rise in the prior month.

"We are at a point where the macro news will continue to be a two-steps forward, one-step back kind of progression, with most of the news showing a firmness, but an occasional data point that will represent a step back," Jim Russell, senior equity strategist for U.S. Bank Wealth Management in Cincinnati.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> dropped 6.64 points, or 0.05 percent, to 13,966.75. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> shed 1.35 points, or 0.09 percent, to 1,520.03. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> lost 1.77 points, or 0.06 percent, to 3,196.89.

The benchmark S&P 500 is up 0.13 percent for the week and is on track to register its seventh straight week of gains by the close of trading Friday, a feat not seen since a run of consecutive weekly gains between December 2010 and January 2011.

A surge in merger and acquisition activity, with more than $158 billion in deals announced so far in 2013, has given further support to the equity market as it points to healthy valuations and bets on the economic outlook.

Herbalife shares pared earlier gains and were up 7.1 percent to $41, a day after billionaire investor Carl Icahn said in a regulatory filing that he now owns 13 percent of Herbalife and was ready to put it in play.

MeadWestvaco Corp climbed 9.8 percent to $34.77 as the biggest percentage gainer on the S&P index after activist investor Nelson Peltz's Trian Fund Management LP said in an SEC filing it had bought about 1.6 million shares of the packaging company.

Burger King Worldwide shares gained 2.5 percent to $17 after it beat estimates with a 94 percent rise in fourth-quarter profit, thanks to new menu additions.

Oil service stocks declined, weighed by a 5.5 percent drop in shares of Transocean to $56.05, after the rig contractor reported its fleet update and Deutsche Bank cut its rating on the stock to "sell." The PHLX oil service sector <.osx> lost 1.7 percent.
