Wives in ads, kids on the bus as GOP voting nears (AP)

CONCORD, N.H. ? Mitt Romney's wife gushes about his silly side and devotion to their five sons and 16 grandchildren. Rick Santorum's college-age daughter opines online about missing the campus coffee shop and chats with friends about their Friday night plans. Jon Huntsman's daughters generate much-needed buzz for him with a joint Twitter account and online videos, including at least one that went viral.

Days away from voting in the Republican presidential race, the path to the nomination is quickly becoming a crowded family affair with spouses and offspring pitching in and doing far more than just smiling from the sidelines.

Ann Romney, Anita Perry and Callista Gingrich are starring in new TV ads for the husbands they've loyally campaigned for. Romney extols her husband's character and says "to me that makes a huge difference" in a candidate. Perry tells the "old-fashioned American story" of how she and her husband were high school sweethearts who had to wait until he was done flying airplanes around the world for the Air Force before they could marry. Callista Gingrich wishes the nation a Merry Christmas "from our family to yours" in husband Newt Gingrich's new holiday-themed TV ad.

Candidate kids, including those born to Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul, are helping, too, acting as surrogates, strategists and, in some cases, sounding boards for parents competing for the right to challenge President Barack Obama next fall.

"There are times when I wonder why I'm not sitting in the coffee shop on campus with my friends, lightheartedly discussing ('Saturday Night Live') videos, how bad the cafeteria is, what our plans are for Friday night or how absolutely swamped we are with school work," Santorum's daughter Elizabeth lamented in a recent blog post. "But this is where God wanted me."

She has taken time off from her junior year at the University of Dallas to serve as a self-described "field staffer/phone banker/chauffeur/surrogate speaker," for her father, primarily in the leadoff caucus state of Iowa.

Her father, who hopes Iowa's socially conservative voters turn out for him on caucus night Jan. 3, rolled out an ad late last week featuring the entire Santorum clan, including the family German shepherd, Schotzy. The spot highlights his 21-year marriage to his wife, Karen, notes that he has coached Little League and introduces viewers to the youngest of the couple's seven children, Isabella, born in 2008 with a genetic disorder.

Sometimes the family members campaign with the candidates and other times they go it alone.

Such family involvement carries risks and benefits. The stories they tell often humanize the candidates and help voters relate to them. But the things they say, and do, can sometimes cause headaches for the campaign advisers who are left to try to figure out a way out.

While Rick Perry spent several days campaigning in Iowa recently, his wife was hundreds of miles away in New Hampshire emphasizing his small-town upbringing and conservative values at a retirement community chapel. Audience members then peppered her with detailed questions about such subjects as taxes, immigration and the death penalty.

"She handled them quite well," said Sid Schoeffler, an independent voter from Concord. "When she knew the answer or knew the campaign's story line, she recited it. And when she didn't know, she said so. I thought that was refreshing."

"Compared to what I expected, she made a favorable impression," he said. "But whether it's enough to swing my vote, I don't know yet."

Earlier in the year, as Bachmann rose in public opinion, her husband, Marcus, was forced to defend his Christian counseling business from claims that its therapies included "curing" people of being gay. With Bachmann now near the back of the GOP pack in polls, Marcus Bachmann joined her at the start of her bus tour of Iowa's 99 counties but was quickly replaced by four of their five children.

"My husband had to go home. We're small-business owners and someone had to go home and mind the store," Bachmann told one crowd. And at one point, Bachmann, who began losing her voice in the middle of the jam-packed tour, turned over the microphone to son Harrison, a teacher who talks up his family's ties to the state, and teased: "Harrison, say some nice things about me and you'll get extra cookies."

In Paul's case, he's probably hoping validation from his son, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., a favorite of the tea party, will give him a boost with that pivotal constituency in Iowa. Rand Paul is also appearing in a television ad for his father.

Romney's five-son family and wife of more than four decades have long been a part of his presidential campaigns. But the spotlight has been shining more brightly on his wife and their brood in recent weeks as the campaign seeks to cast the former Massachusetts governor as a person of "steadiness and constancy" while drawing a contrast with the thrice-married Gingrich.

Ann Romney also has spoken openly about how her husband supported her through her struggle with multiple sclerosis.

Huntsman's wife and the couple's three oldest daughters are near-constant companions in New Hampshire, the only state where the former Utah governor is earnestly campaigning. His daughters recently generated a huge amount of buzz with a video spoof of an ad by former rival Herman Cain. They donned oversized glasses and fake mustaches to look like Cain's campaign manager.

"We are shamelessly promoting our dad like no other candidate's family has," one daughter said in the ad. "But then again, no one's ever seen a trio like the Jon2012 girls."

OnLive compatibility comes to Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

Updated 09:01 23 Dec 2011 by Luke Johnson

Having failed to make an impression on the smartphone market the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play has added OnLive game streaming compatibility

?

Having suffered a wholly undramatic introduction to existence with a flurry of bad reviews and poor sales the gaming centric Sony Ericsson Xperia Play has been handed a new lease of life with an OnLive application released for the Android handset.

Following on from the launch of the OnLive iOS and Android applications earlier this month that allow the subscription based game streaming service to play core titles via the web on their Apple iDevices and Android tablets and smartphones, the gaming giant has released a software patch allowing for full compatibility of the Xperia Play?s inbuilt PS3-esque gaming controls.

"From the moment we launched our OnLive Android app, gamers began asking about Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY game control support," said Steve Perlman, OnLive Founder and CEO.

"We listened and delivered. Now Xperia PLAY gamers in the US and UK can play almost all of OnLive's 200 premium titles-including hit AAA games like Saints Row: The Third and Assassin's Creed: Revelations-on their Xperia PLAY smartphone with a full console-class experience, including multiplayer and social features."

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play Features

Launched to much hype but little fanfare earlier in the year the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play features a distinctly average array of specs with the Android 2.3 Gingerbread device boasting a 1GHz single-core processor and just 512MB of RAM.

As well as its PlayStation certified gaming credentials the Xperia Play?s entertainment appeal is handled by the inclusion of a 5-megapixel rear-mounted camera whilst a 4-inch LCD touchscreen display handles the visuals. A mere 400MB of internal storage is bolstered by the boxed inclusion of an 8GB SD card.

Does the arrival of Xperia Play gamepad compatibility further tempt you into splashing out on OnLive or have you already adopted the streaming game service? Let us know via the comments box below.

The New Spouses? Scandal

Q. Laugh at the Ornithophobe: I am incredibly afraid of turkeys. I dislike their fleshy heads, their huge feathery bodies, the noises they make. Chickens freak me out, too. I literally startle if I accidentally see a picture of a turkey, never mind the panic that rises in me when I see one in real life. In general, all birds freak me out. I know it's a ridiculous fear, one that many wouldn't understand, but then again I love snakes and don't mind spiders. My boyfriend's family like to hide pictures of turkeys in places where I will find them and freak out. I have asked them to stop, and I have asked him to ask them to stop, but they insist it's all in good fun. Last time I went over they hid a picture of a beheaded turkey, my worst fear of all, don't ask, in my purse. I nearly threw up when I saw it and shook for several hours afterward. With Thanksgiving coming up, I am freaked out about what they might do. How can I make it clear to them that this really bothers me?

Expanded Gaming Becomes Law in MA | BloodHorse.com

By Lynne Snierson

Expanded gambling became legal in Massachusetts Nov. 22, when Gov. Deval Patrick signed the bill to authorize three destination resort casinos and one slots facility, which will all be competitively bid with no guarantees for racetracks. Nonetheless, the law provides subsidies?that will benefit directly the state?s struggling horse racing industry.

Horse racing interests are set to receive 9% of the revenue from the slots facility, 5% of the projected $280 million licensing fees for all four gaming facilities, and 2.5% of the state's 25% share of the gross gaming revenue from the three resort casinos. A five-member gaming commission to be chosen with input from the state?s attorney general and treasurer will oversee the new industry.

?Expanded gaming in Massachusetts, for me, is about creating jobs,? Patrick said before signing the bill. ?I am pleased to sign this bill today and proud of the work my team and the legislators have done to bring it to this point.?

Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo, who represents the district where Suffolk Downs is located and is the son of a late-long time worker at the track, was instrumental in passage of the legislation. Suffolk Downs, which has partnered with Caesar?s Entertainment and intends to seek the casino license designated for the Boston region, is viewed as the prohibitive favorite to win that bid.

While appearing on Boston talk radio station WTKK before signing the bill on the morning of Nov. 22, the governor took umbrage when host Jim Braude intimated the gambling bill?s multi-million dollar subsidy for the horse racing industry was an ?entry fee? required by DeLeo.

?I think that?s unfair,? Patrick said. ?A lot of the breeders, a lot of the horse farms are right here in Massachusetts. We?ve got other things in this bill that are about other protected industries if you will, like the requirement that cultural venues like the Hanover Theater in Worcester will get a portion of the proceeds and some rules about the size of the entertainment venues at casinos in order to protect their markets. People can quarrel about whether it was done with the right precision.?

The bill also extends the minimum number of days required for live racing once gaming becomes operational. Suffolk, which now conducts a meet of 80 days, would race at least 105 days in the first calendar year of operation, 115 the next year, and 125 days the following year. The live racing dates and requirements will be subject to review by the new gaming commission.

Resort casino licenses each carry a fee of $85 million and the successful bidders are required to invest at least $500 million in their facilities. The single, competitively bid slots-only parlor operator will have to?pay a $25 million licensing fee and invest a minimum $125 million. While the casinos are designated for three separate regions of the state, the slots facility can be located anywhere.

It is estimated the licensing process will take at least one year and it will be another year before the slots parlor is operational, and then another two years at a minimum before the resort casinos open their doors.

Anger mounts as MF Global clients see $3 billion still stuck (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Three weeks after MF Global's collapsed, furious former customers are still fighting for access to billions of dollars as they question why as much as two-thirds of their money is still stuck.

While authorities have touted the fact that they are returning 60 percent of the collateral and cash that had been frozen in the wake of the broker's October 31 bankruptcy, a closer look shows that in fact only about 40 percent of customers' total funds have been authorized for release so far.

The remainder, more than $3 billion, ostensibly remains on hand to cover a shortfall originally estimated by MF Global to regulators at just $600 million.

Because the bankruptcy trustee, regulators and exchanges have made no comment on the missing funds in weeks -- and have given no information as to how much cash they are retaining -- customers are left guessing exactly how much might end up in the creditors' process of the bankruptcy.

After weeks of intense lobbying by customers and exchanges, trustee James Giddens last week won court approval to release another $520 million in funds from MF Global accounts that contained only cash as of October 31.

But that has still left thousands of customers in an uproar. Clients who had a mix of cash and trading positions have yet to see a dime of their excess funds, they say. The trustee is planning a third cash transfer to cover these clients, but no timing for that tranche has been announced.

"The whole process is a mess," said Jason Skole, a private investor who had invested $200,000 at the start of this year in a small hedge fund who traded through MF Global.

"Those who had just cash positions will get some of their money. All I've got is 60 percent of the small amount of collateral I had backing trades," he said. He says around $185,000 of his money is still frozen at the bankrupt firm.

Giddens said late last week that they were working on a third bulk transfer to "true up" the value of distributions so that all former customers get the total 60 percent of their net equity, but they weren't yet confident enough in MF Global's bookkeeping and cash on hand to go beyond that.

"We've seen enough (money) to make the 60 percent distributions but we can't distribute money we don't have," Giddens' spokesman Kent Jarrell told Reuters on Sunday.

"As soon as we identify assets under our control, we are trying to distribute them. And we can't get ahead of that because then we can run out of assets.... We have to find the assets and we have to make sure we have to control those assets. It's a time consuming, complex task and we have hundreds of people working on it on our end now."

CME Group referred all questions to the trustee.

MONEY TRAIL

The tale of the customer's funds goes like this. On October 31, exchange operator CME Group estimated in a court filing that there was a "requirement" of some $5.5 billion in segregated customer funds -- including, presumably, the missing funds that could not be immediately located.

Over the following weeks, while authorities poured over sloppy and haphazard records, the trustee identified two pools of money that could be partly returned to customers.

The first was $2.5 billion in collateral that was being used as margin to cover existing trades. Those trading positions were transferred to new brokers along with 60 percent of the value of the collateral, or about $1.55 billion.

The second was $869 million that was left in MF Global accounts that contained nothing but cash -- either because customers had liquidated all their trades before October 31, or because they simply had no positions open as it failed. The bankruptcy court ruled last week that those account holders would also get back 60 percent, or about $520 million.

Those two pools of funds only account for about $3.4 billion of the original total $5.5 billion. The customers whose accounts hold that remaining $2-plus billion have never been explicitly identified, or told when they will get their funds.

"We have the $520 million to do distribution of cash accounts. And we knew we had the assets to distribute on the first one around. Now we also feel confident we have enough to true up. What we don't know is what we'll have beyond that," said Jarrell.

It's clear that some cash is being held back in order to cover the missing money that regulators say MF Global may have taken from customer accounts, an unprecedented violation of one of the fundamental tenets of commodity brokers.

What has not been clear is why officials have declined to be more specific about how much money they believe should be in those accounts, regardless of what is missing.

"...The Trustee should publish a report showing how much funds have been accounted for, how much has been distributed and how much he is still holding," said Ronald Filler, director of the Center on Financial Services Law at New York Law School.

"Once the accounting nears completion, one would hope that another 20 percent or more will soon be distributed, leaving an adequate amount to cushion any shortfall. If the Trustee holds on to the remaining 40 percent without explanation, then one could possibly presume that the shortfall may be greater than $600 million. Let's hope not."

One answer became clearer on Friday: Some, perhaps most, of those unexplained funds are being held by customers who had both open trades and large sums of money on account at the stricken brokerage, ex-MF Global customers said. While these customers have been reunited with their open trades, their cash is still frozen.

The result? More than $3.3 billion or 60 percent of total customer funds at the time of the bankruptcy are still frozen.

MOUNTING ANGER

While customers were initially outraged at the thought that MF Global had tapped into their segregated funds, that rage has increasingly been targeted at the trustee and the bankruptcy court for the handling of an unprecedented collapse.

"The (bankruptcy) Trustee is creating new protected classes within a pool of segregated customer assets," said John Roe, a spokesman for the Commodity Customer Coalition, a group lobbying for the speedy release of funds representing 7,000 former MF Global customers.

"(This) has dangerous implications in future Future Commission Merchant (FCM) bankruptcies. How is this in the interests of customers, FCMs, bankruptcy creditors or the system as a whole?"

It is still unclear what happened to the $600 million of customer funds unaccounted for since MF Global's Chapter 11 filing, and whether MF Global might have illegally mixed customer funds with its own or used them for its own proprietary trading.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission, federal prosecutors and the Securities and Exchange Commission are all investigating the bankruptcy.

Ozone from rock fracture could serve as earthquake early warning

Friday, November 18, 2011

Researchers the world over are seeking reliable ways to predict earthquakes, focusing on identifying seismic precursors that, if detected early enough, could serve as early warnings.

New research, published this week in the journal Applied Physics Letters, suggests that ozone gas emitted from fracturing rocks could serve as an indicator of impending earthquakes. Ozone is a natural gas, a byproduct of electrical discharges into the air from several sources, such as from lightning, or, according to the new research, from rocks breaking under pressure.

Scientists in the lab of Ra?l A. Baragiola, a professor of engineering physics in the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science set up experiments to measure ozone produced by crushing or drilling into different igneous and metamorphic rocks, including granite, basalt, gneiss, rhyolite and quartz. Different rocks produced different amounts of ozone, with rhyolite producing the strongest ozone emission.

Some time prior to an earthquake, pressures begin to build in underground faults. These pressures fracture rocks, and presumably, would produce detectable ozone.

To distinguish whether the ozone was coming from the rocks or from reactions in the atmosphere, the researchers conducted experiments in pure oxygen, nitrogen, helium and carbon dioxide. They found that ozone was produced by fracturing rocks only in conditions containing oxygen atoms, such as air, carbon dioxide and pure oxygen molecules, indicating that it came from reactions in the gas. This suggests that rock fractures may be detectable by measuring ozone.

Baragiola began the study by wondering if animals, which seem ? at least anecdotally ? to be capable of anticipating earthquakes, may be sensitive to changing levels of ozone, and therefore able to react in advance to an earthquake. It occurred to him that if fracturing rocks create ozone, then ozone detectors might be used as warning devices in the same way that animal behavioral changes might be indicators of seismic activity.

He said the research has several implications.

"If future research shows a positive correlation between ground-level ozone near geological faults and earthquakes, an array of interconnected ozone detectors could monitor anomalous patterns when rock fracture induces the release of ozone from underground and surface cracks," he said.

"Such an array, located away from areas with high levels of ground ozone, could be useful for giving early warning to earthquakes."

He added that detection of an increase of ground ozone might also be useful in anticipating disasters in tunnel excavation, landslides and underground mines.

Canon PowerShot S100

The Canon PowerShot S100 ($429.99 direct) is the follow-up to the popular S95 ($399.99, 4 stars), a camera that we liked enough to award our Editors' Choice. Although it's priced slightly higher, the 12-megapixel S100 improves on the S95 in many ways. Its zoom lens starts at a wider focal length and delivers a longer zoom range, recycle time has been cut drastically, and a GPS has been added. That's enough for it to replace the S95 as our? favorite high-end pocket camera.

Design and Features
The S100 is almost identical in size and design to its predecessor.?At 2.3 by 3.9 by 1.1 inches (HWD) and 7 ounces, it is a bit larger and heavier than competing compact cameras, such as Canon's own 2.2-by-3.8-by-0.9-inch, 4.9-ounce PowerShot Elph 310 HS ($259.99, 4 stars). Available in black and matte silver, the S100 feels a bit heavy for its size, thanks to its sturdy metal construction. The extra weight should actually help you to keep the camera steady when taking photos, but will be noticed if you are used to carrying a plastic camera. It's not out of line when compared with other compacts with fast lenses. Panasonic's top-end point-and-shoot, the Lumix DMC-LX5 ($499.99, 3.5 stars), weighs 9.3 ounces and measures 2.6 by 4.3 by 1.7 inches.

The lens covers a 24-105mm (35mm equivalent) field of view, which is a 5x zoom range. At the wide end it opens up to f/2, which lets quite a bit of light in, but the aperture narrows to f/5.9 at the telephoto end of its zoom. The Olympus XZ-1 ($499.99, 3.5 stars) features a slightly faster f/1.8 lens, but it only covers a 28-112mm field of view. Because of the S100's fast lens, long exposures in bright conditions can be troublesome, but a neutral density filter?which can be activated via the menu system?is built into to reduce the amount of light coming in to the lens, making it possible to use longer exposures when photographing waterfalls, rivers, and other scenes where a long exposure is desirable.

The 3-inch LCD is packed with 460k dots, and even though it is as crisp and bright as the screen found on the S95, it is no longer the best you'll find on a point-and-shoot camera. Other pocket models, including the Samsung TL500 ($449.99, 3 stars) now employ twice-as-sharp 920k-dot screens. With a camera like this, the LCD is the only way you can frame and review images in the field, and the extra resolution makes it easier to determine if you've nailed a shot.

One thing missing from the S100 is a hot shoe. Other cameras in this class, including the Olympus XZ-1, Panasonic LX5, and Samsung TL500, all have one?but Canon requires you to move up to the considerably larger PowerShot G12 ($499.99, 2.5 stars) to get one. The main advantage of a hot shoe is the ability to use an external flash or wireless flash controller with the camera.

Physical controls are the same as you'll find on other point-and-shoots, with one exception. In addition to a mode dial, 4-way scrolling command dial, and a dedicated Movie Record button, the S100 has a front control ring surrounding its lens. This ring can be configured to control a number of camera functions, including EV compensation, ISO, zoom, and focus. ?The software menu system is well executed, and will be familiar to anyone who has picked up a Canon camera before. Options are presented as clear, crisp text with an explanation of the function displayed across the bottom of the LCD.

The S100 also supports Raw shooting, which records all of the information that is gathered by the lens and sensor. Enthusiasts love to shoot Raw since it provides extra control, but you lose the convenience factor of simply being able to download photos to your computer and immediately share them with friends. Raw files must be developed using specific software in order to convert them into files that can be printed or shared online.

Performance and ConclusionsCanon PowerShot S100 Benchmark Tests
The S100 performed admirably in our speed tests. The camera takes 2.3 seconds to start up and grab a shot, and can capture another photo every half second in continuous shooting mode. Shutter lag measured at only 0.3 second, which is an excellent score for a camera that you can slide into your pocket. ?Other cameras in this class weren't able to match the S100's performance. The Panasonic LX5 comes closest?it starts a bit faster, grabbing the first shot in 1.9 seconds, but records a 0.5 second shutter lag and requires you to wait 1.4 seconds between shots.

I used the Imatest software suite to measure the camera's sharpness and image noise performance. The S100 scored exceptionally well in the sharpness test, recording 1,989 lines per picture height. A score of 1,800 is considered to be acceptably sharp, making the S100's score especially impressive when you consider its small form factor. Among cameras currently on the market, the S100 is the sharpest high-end compact that we've tested. The Samsung TL500 came closest, scoring 1,972 lines.

I measured image noise at the many ISO settings that the camera supports, from its base sensitivity of 80 through its maximum of 6400. As a camera's sensitivity to light increases, image noise increases as well. When an image is more than 1.5 percent noise it is considered to be too grainy for general use. The S100 was able to stay under this threshold through ISO 2000, which will allow you to snap good-looking photos in poor light thanks also to its fast f/2 aperture lens. The Panasonic LX5, Samsung TL500, and Olympus XZ-1 keep noise below 1.5 percent at ISO 1600, but cross the barrier at the next setting.

The built-in GPS performs quite well. It acquired a signal within minutes in both suburban New Jersey and midtown Manhattan, the latter being quite the challenge for many cameras. The GPS records the coordinates of where you are standning when taking a photo. Most popular photo software, including Picasa, iPhoto, and Lightroom, will display your photos on a map, or allow you to click on a link that opens the coordinates in Google Maps. Using the GPS didn't?appear to put much of a strain on the battery. I was using the GPS in its default mode, which only searches for a signal when the camera is on. There is another mode that periodically looks for a signal, even when the camera is off, that will put more stress on the battery, but speed signal acquisition time.

Video is recorded in 1080p24 or 720p30 HD resolution. It is stored in QuickTime format for easy upload to your computer and the Web, and looks quite good. Colors were rich and details were sharp, although there were a few jitters zooming in and out in my tests. The sound of the lens zooming is picked up on the audio track, although it is not overly loud. The camera features standard mini USB and mini HDMI for computer and HDTV connectivity. It supports SD, SDHC, and SCXC memory cards.

The Canon PowerShot S100 takes everything the S95 did right and improves on it. Even though the S95 is still available through retail channels, the longer zoom range, faster recycle time, and GPS make the S100 well worth the extra $30. Two other cameras in this class, the Olympus XZ-1 and Samsung TL500, have slightly faster f/1.8 lenses, higher-resolution displays, and hot shoes. But they are more expensive than the S100 and lack its GPS and longer zoom range. Because of its excellent performance, well-rounded feature set, and relatively modest price, the S100 easily earns our Editors' Choice award for high-end compact cameras.

How to Ask a New Acquaintance to Be Your Friend [Social Gps]

How to Ask a New Acquaintance to Be Your FriendMeeting new friends can be tough, often because you have the daunting task of conveying interest without conveying too much interest. So how do you ask a person out on a friend date without it being too awkward? We asked for advice, and here's what we learned.

How to Ask a New Acquaintance to Be Your FriendBefore we get started, let's define this situation a little bit. Sometimes you find yourself waiting in a long line for coffee, a movie, or an ice cream sandwich and you end up talking to a cool guy or girl. You think, hey, I'd like to be friends with this person. You also think that might be a little strange since you've had a conversation for maybe 10 minutes with a complete stranger. Nonetheless, you like this person and you think you'd like to have them as a friend. You decide to ask them out on a friend date. But what do you say? That's what we're dealing with in this post.

Be Clear: This Is Not a Date

Although we'd like to say that gender combinations have no effect on this situation, they do to some extent. A guy asking a guy to hang out is going to be a little different than a girl asking a girl for the same. It gets a little more complicated when you mix up the sexes, because there's a general assumption that spending time together translates to a date of the more romantic variety. It's important to be clear about your intentions, and since you'll be in the midst of a conversation before you, er, pop the question, you'll have an opportunity to express them. Therapist Roger S. Gil offers a few suggestions for handling this sort of situation:

[One] gender issue to consider is the "are they hitting on me" factor.? If you're trying to befriend someone of the opposite sex, you might lead them to believe that you're hitting on them if you ask them to hang out outright.? This is less common when trying to befriend someone of the same sex but it does happen so be mindful of the questions you ask (e.g. "Are you single?").? An implicit way of removing the "are they hitting on me" factor is to mention any significant other you may have.? That way you're declaring your unavailability and implying that you're not looking for a mate?just a friend.

How to "Pick Up" a Friend

You're having a nice conversation but time is running thin. You want to see this person again, but you want them to know your interests are entirely platonic. Here's what you can say.

"Would you like to do __________ sometime?" or "I'm doing __________ later. Want to come with?"
How to Ask a New Acquaintance to Be Your FriendRoger suggests you should "[a]void comments like, 'you seem pretty cool, we should hang out' unless you really just hit it off with the person. Such comments can weird people out.? By keeping it about something else (e.g. not them but about a shared interest), you avoid them becoming defensive." Suggesting a common activity makes it easier for the person to be honest. Rejecting an activity is considerably easier than rejecting a person.

"Are you on Facebook?"
If you're feeling hesitant and not really sure if they want to hang out, you can always resort to the cushion of social media. Virtually everyone is on Facebook, so you know the answer you're going to get. You can exchange information, potentially even send a friend request right then and there, and continue talking with the aid of the internet. If you feel like you need more time to develop the friendship before the two of you start spending time together, this is an easy, simple way to do it.

"Do you want to hang out sometime? I'm not looking for a date, but I'd like to be friends."
Often times the best thing you can do is be straightforward and honest. Although this may put your potential friend on the defensive should they not want to spend any additional time with you, it's hard to fault a person for being clear and true. When I posed this question to friends and Lifehacker readers, this was the most common advice (not counting the many jokes and I Love You, Man references, of course).

How to Deal with the Aftermath

You managed to ask the question, but now what? If they said yes, you have to move forward with the details. If they said no, you have another awkward situation to deal with. Here's how to handle both.

How to Ask a New Acquaintance to Be Your FriendIf your new friend says yes, the burden is on you to plan your upcoming friend date (unless you've decided to go the Facebook route and take it slow). Chances are you decided you liked this person because of a common interest, so figuring out what to do shouldn't be difficult. Find an activity that relates to what you talked about, suggest it, and do it. If you don't have that kind of information, you can always just grab lunch and get to know each other a little better. The awkward part is over and they like you enough to hang out, so you simply need to consider them one of your friends.

How to Ask a New Acquaintance to Be Your FriendIn the event you get a no you have to accept the fact that you just turned a pleasant conversation into something that's pretty awkward. If you're stuck in the same place together that conversation is likely going to stop and a cloud of discomfort will suddenly seem to form around the two of you. The best thing you can do when you hear that unpleasant no is say something like, "No worries, it was nice meeting you" and just move on with your day. Rejection isn't fun, especially when things seem to be going well, but it happens. If you can handle it gracefully you're making the best out of a bad situation.

Hopefully everything will work out and you'll have a cool new friend. While making new friends can be awkward, it isn't a big deal either. Although we've just strategized in a reasonably long, stick-figure illustrated post, in the end you're doing something very simple. Just ask the question you want to ask and handle the response?good or bad?with grace. It'll be a little awkward, but that's often how good things begin.

This post was illustrated by Dana Zemack. Check out more of her stick figure comics and follow her on Twitter.

House-Senate negotiators unveil spending bill (AP)

WASHINGTON ? House and Senate negotiators have agreed on a bundle of spending measures for the ongoing budget year, blending cuts to NASA and community development programs while averting cuts to nutrition programs.

The approximately $182 billion measure announced late Monday would fund day-to-day operations at the departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Justice, Transportation and Housing and Urban Development, as well as the space program.

It also contains stopgap spending legislation to keep the government running until Dec. 16 and buy lawmakers more time for a raft of other spending bills, but many of those measures are freighted with controversy. Without the stopgap measure, the government would partially shut down this weekend.

Lawmakers face a midnight Friday deadline to act on the measure. House and Senate leaders promised votes this week.

The legislation would represent the first concrete step to implement a contentious budget pact sealed by President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans this summer, which traded a $2 trillion-plus increase in the government's ability to borrow to meet its obligations with promises of future budget cuts.

The legislation represents a hard-fought bargain between the GOP-controlled House and the Democratic Senate by the powerful Appropriations committees. But it's sure to run into opposition from tea party Republicans who want deeper cuts.

"We've cut total discretionary spending for the second year in a row ? a remarkable achievement that will save taxpayers billions of dollars and help get our nation's budget back into balance," said House Appropriations Committee Chairman Harold Rogers, R-Ky.

It comes as a congressional debt-reduction supercommittee is wrestling over cuts to benefit programs like Medicare and farm subsidies, whose budgets essentially run on autopilot and aren't funded year to year.

Congress has yet to complete action on a single spending measure for the 2012 budget year, which started more than a month ago.

The August budget agreement set a $1.043 trillion "cap" on agency operating levels, about a $7 billion cut ? less than 1 percent ? from prior-year levels. But the budget pact also permits more than $11 billion in additional spending for natural disasters, which means the current crop of spending bills will ultimately exceed the cost of the last round ? a sore point with tea party conservatives already unhappy with the GOP's efforts to cut spending.

The measure contains $2.3 billion for disaster aid, much of it to rebuild roads and bridges destroyed by this year's floods in the Northeast and Midwest. A later bill would provide the Federal Emergency Management Agency with several billion dollars more.

An earlier omnibus spending measure enacted in April covered the 2011 budget year that ended Sept. 30. It cut spending below 2010 levels set by a Democratic-controlled Congress by about $40 billion.

The range of spending covered by Monday's measure includes community development grants, Amtrak operating subsidies, funding for private sector space flight and the FBI. Still to come is legislation funding the Pentagon, homeland security and a variety of other agencies. Future bills will prove more difficult to negotiate as rival Democrats and Republicans have to sort through dozens of controversies involving flashpoints like environmental policy and abortion.

The Senate turned Monday to another hybrid measure blending the foreign aid budget with budgets for the Energy and Treasury departments.

NASA would absorb a $648 million cut, made possible by the retirement of the space shuttle fleet. Democrats restored cuts to housing subsidies for the poor, food stamps and a popular program that feeds mothers and their infants. Amtrak would receive $1.4 billion for operating subsidies and capital improvements, while a much-criticized program that subsidizes airlines that serve rural airports was largely left intact.

Obama's request for a huge budget increase for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, which is responsible for implementing much of last year's rewrite of financial regulation, was cut from $308 million to $205 million. The Wall Street overhaul is deeply unpopular with most Republicans.

The measure doesn't contain congressional pet projects known as earmarks, which have been banned at the insistence of Republicans like House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio. But opponents of spending will still find much to dislike, such as potato and aquaculture research.

The House is slated to vote Thursday on the spending measures, with the Senate to follow.

Self-organized pituitary-like tissue from mouse ES cells

Tuesday, November 15, 2011

The possibility that functional, three-dimensional tissues and organs may be derived from pluripotent cells, such as embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), represents one of the grand challenges of stem cell research, but is also one of the fundamental goals of the emerging field of regenerative medicine. Developmental biology has played a central role in informing such efforts, as it has been shown that stem cell differentiation can be directed to follow a given lineage pathway by culturing stem cells in conditions that recapitulate the specific cellular and molecular environment from which such cells normally emerge during embryogenesis. Intriguingly, recent work has shown that when ES cells are cultured under the appropriate conditions, they can be driven to self-organize into complex, three-dimensional tissue-like structures that closely resemble their physiological counterparts, a remarkable advance for the field.

New work by Hidetaka Suga of the Division of Human Stem Cell Technology, Yoshiki Sasai, Group Director of the Laboratory for Organogenesis and Neurogenesis, and others has unlocked the most recent achievement in self-organized tissue differentiation, steering mouse ESCs to give rise to tissue closely resembling the hormone-secreting component of the pituitary, known as the adenohypophysis, in vitro. Conducted in collaboration with Yutaka Oiso at the Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine, this work was published in Nature.

The Sasai group has complied an impressive list of achievements in induced differentiation using an ES cell culture technique dubbed SFEBq (shorthand for "serum-free floating culture of embryoid body-like aggregates with quick re-aggregation"), including high-efficiency methods for the differentiation of dopaminergic, cerebral cortex, cerebellar Purkinje, and other neuronal cell types. In recent years, refinements of this approach have enabled the first tantalizing insights into the developmental capacity of pluripotent stem cells, showing their ability to give rise to multi-cell-type populations of cortical and retinal neurons that spontaneously self-organize into stratified tissue nearly identical to that of the developing embryo.

In the group's most recent work, Suga sought to use SFEBq to derive the secretory component of the pituitary (hypophysis) from mouse ES cells. In embryonic development, the pituitary emerges from a region of the non-neural (rostral) head ectoderm, adjacent to the anterior neural plate. Guided by molecular interactions, this placodal region forms an indentation, known as Rathke's pouch, in the developmental predecessor of the roof of the mouth, and eventually gives rise to the anterior section of the pituitary, the source of hormones involved in growth, reproduction and modulating the physiological response to stress.

The Sasai lab had previously reported how a modified version of the SFEBq approach lacking extrinsic growth factors could spur ES cells to give rise to hypothalamic neurons. Building on this finding, Suga found by further tweaking the conditions he could steer populations of such stem cells to differentiate simultaneously into the neighboring rostral head ectoderm and hypothalamic neuroectoderm, both of which are required to development of the adenohypophysis. Interestingly, the cells in these clusters spontaneously organized into distinct layers resembling those of the corresponding embryonic tissues. This effect appears to be attributable to the increase of BMP signaling in larger cell aggregates, leading to differentiation into non-neural ectoderm. To test whether co-culture of this ectoderm with hypothalamic tissue would lead to the formation of Rathke's pouch-like structures, Suga observed the ESC-derived aggregates for nearly two weeks, and found that by adding the signaling factor Sonic hedgehog, he was able to induce the self-directed formation of this vesicular tissue.

The next important test was whether this in vitro anterior pituitary anlage would show similar functionality to the physiological activity of the adenohypophysis. Of the many critically important pituitary hormones, they chose adenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) for their first assay. Previous research had suggested that Notch signaling interferes with the development of ACTH-secreting cells, so the group added a Notch blocker to the culture medium and found that this triggered the generation of such cells at high efficiencies. Following a similar principle, they showed that by adding Wnt, glucocorticoid and insulin to the culture at appropriate doses and stages, they could obtain growth hormone-secreting cells in quantity. By varying the recipe of the growth factor cocktail, they were able to induce other pituitary hormones as well. And, critically, the group was able to show that in vitro hormone secretion could respond to requisite signals and engage in regulatory feedback just as in the body.

In a final series of experiments, Suga et al. transplanted the ESC-derived ACTH-secreting tissue into the kidneys of adult mice whose own pituitary glands had been ablated, to see whether it would be capable of compensating for pituitary function in this model system. Within a week of transplantation, these mice showed strong overall survival, a marked rise in ACTH levels and a concomitant increase in corticosterone (a glucocorticoid hormone stimulated by ACTH) over untransplanted controls, which uniformly weakened and died within eight weeks of hypophysectomy.

Yoshiki Sasai, leader of the study, commented on this most recent demonstration of the remarkable self-organizing capabilities of embryonic stem cells in vitro. "We have previously shown how ES cells can give rise to self-organized, three-dimensional neuronal and sensory tissues, and in this report we describe for the first time how this principle can be used to generate to an endocrine tissue, suggesting our approach is of general applicability. Suga, himself an endocrinologist, remarks, "We currently treat pituitary deficiencies by hormone replacement, but achieving the correct dosage is not a straightforward problem, given the naturally fluctuating levels secreted within the body. I am hopeful that this new finding will lead to further advances in regenerative medicine in the endocrine system."

Nickelback's Thanksgiving Show Makes United Way 'Grateful'

Organization addresses controversy surrounding band's halftime performance in Detroit in an email to MTV News.

By now, you've no doubt heard what some Detroit Lions fans have to say about Nickelback's halftime performance at the team's annual Thanksgiving game (hint, it isn't good), but to date, folks with the Lions — and the NFL, for that matter — have remained silent on the matter.

The same cannot be said, however, for the United Way, the sponsors of the halftime show, who released a statement last week officially confirming that Nickelback were onboard for the event, and have now weighed in on the controversy surrounding their performance. In particular, the organization addressed criticism from some Lions fans that an artist from Detroit should have been booked for the high-profile game in an email to MTV News.

"We're grateful to Nickelback for generously donating time and resources to this effort," United Way director of publicity Sal Fabens wrote. "This is a nationally televised show that historically has featured artists from many locations, such as Indiana's John Mellencamp [and] New York's Mary J. Blige ... For the past two years, we featured Motown artists and Detroit's own Kid Rock, but the performers have never been limited to those from Detroit."

Fabens also wrote that, in one way, the fact that some 75,000 fans have signed an online petition calling for the band's ouster is fitting, since the theme of the United Way's halftime performance is "Live United."

"This is a call to action, an invitation for everyone to join us, regardless of their stance on various issues, to move forward on creating opportunities for a better life for all," he wrote. "It's going to take everyone working together ... to make progress on ambitious goals in the areas of education, income and health across the country ... We invite varying points of view and voices to all come together so we can move forward.

"We would hope that various opinions about a rock band don't overshadow the fact that the band's generosity is helping to bring attention to this message," Fabens' email concluded.

Visual Spicer creates a 7-foot tall papercraft Gundam, films the entire process as a timelapse (video)

Believe it or not, the massive seven-foot Gundam you're looking at was mostly constructed out of paper -- 720 sheets, to be exact. The papercraft artist behind the model, Taras Lesko (aka Visual Spicer), began creating it nearly a year ago, and estimates that it took him about 350 hours and four to five months to complete. As explained on his video commentary, the process started with building a store-bought model for photographs, using the shots to render it in 3D on his computer. After that, he created various templates using a variety of programs, which were then printed, cut and assembled into place. Notably, the final product has 1,250 total parts, weighs in at about 10 pounds and packs an internal 12-piece foamboard skeleton to stand. All of that is only the part of the final product, though.

Taking it a few steps further, he created a bevy of "fantasy shots" (like the one above) with his brother, Ivan -- and of course, Photoshop -- and even filmed both endeavors as timelapse videos. According to Taras, the aim was to make something "bigger and better" than the four-foot papercraft Gundam, which he made nearly three years ago and burned to ashes on video prior to this project -- we'd say mission accomplished. You'll find the construction timelapse video after the break, along with more related vids and photos at the source link below.

[Thanks, Christos]

Obama seeks Russia, China help on Iran (AP)

HONOLULU ? Searching for help, President Barack Obama lobbied the skeptical leaders of Russia and China on Saturday for support in keeping Iran from becoming a nuclear-armed menace to the world, hoping to yield a "common response" to a deepening problem.

Yet Obama's talk of solidarity with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Chinese President Hu Jintao was not publicly echoed by either man as Iran moved anew to the fore of the international stage ? and to the front of the fierce U.S. presidential race.

The United States' vast worries about Iran grew starker with a report this week by the U.N. atomic agency that asserted in the strongest terms yet Iran is conducting secret work with the sole intent of developing nuclear arms. The U.S. claims a nuclear-armed Iran could set off an arms race among rival states and directly threaten Israel.

Russia and China remain a roadblock to the United States in its push to tighten international sanctions on Iran. Both are veto-wielding members of the U.N. Security Council and have shown no sign the new report will change their stand.

With Medvedev on the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific summit here, Obama said the two "reaffirmed our intention to work to shape a common response" on Iran.

Shortly after, Obama joined Hu, in a run of back-to-back diplomacy with the heads of two allies that hold complicated and at times divisive relations with the United States.

Speaking to reporters before he talked to Hu, Obama said that he and the Chinese leader want to ensure that Iran abides by "international rules and norms."

Obama's comments were broad enough to portray a united front without yielding any clear indication of progress. Medvedev, for his part, was largely silent on Iran during his remarks, merely acknowledging that the subject was discussed. Hu did not mention Iran at all.

As the president held forth on the world stage in his home state, Republicans vying to compete against Obama for the presidency unleashed withering criticism in a debate in South Carolina. It was a rare moment in which foreign policy garnered attention in a campaign dominated by the flagging U.S. economy.

"If we re-elect Barack Obama, Iran will have a nuclear weapon. And if you elect Mitt Romney, Iran will not have a nuclear weapon," said Romney, the former Massachusetts governor. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann warned that Iran's attempt to develop a nuclear weapon is setting the table "for worldwide nuclear war against Israel."

Iran has insisted its nuclear work is in the peaceful pursuit of energy and research, not weaponry.

U.S. officials have said the report by the International Atomic Energy Agency was unlikely to persuade China and Russia to support tougher sanctions on the Iranian government. But led by Obama, the administration is still trying to mount pressure on Iran, both through the United Nations and its own, for fear of what may come should Iran proceed undeterred.

More broadly, Obama sought Saturday to position the United States as a Pacific power determined to get more American jobs by tapping the explosive potential of the Asia-Pacific.

For businesses, he said, "this is where the action's going to be."

"There is no region in the world that we consider more vital than the Asia-Pacific region," he told chief executives gathered for a regional economic summit.

The president went so far as to saying the United States had grown "a little bit lazy" in trying to attract business to the United States.

Underscoring the search for some good economic news ahead heading toward a re-election vote, Obama announced the broad outlines of an agreement to create a transpacific trade zone encompassing the United States and eight other nations. He said details must still be worked out, but said the goal was to complete the deal by next year.

"The United States is a Pacific power and we're here to stay," Obama said.

The eight countries joining the U.S. in the zone would be Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. A central topic for Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda was Japan's interest in joining the trade bloc.

In a sign of potential tension with China, Mike Froman, a deputy national security adviser who focuses on international economic matters, shrugged off complaints from China that it had not been invited to join the trade bloc.

He told reporters that China had not expressed interest in joining and said the trade group "is not something that one gets invited to. It's something that one aspires to."

Addressing the European debt crisis, Obama said he welcomed the new governments being formed in Greece and Italy, saying they should help calm world financial markets.

Medvedev thanked Obama for his support in Russia's expected entrance into the World Trade Organization, asserting that Russia has received more help from this administration than all previous ones. Russia is expected to join the WTO next year, a step that would require Congress to approve permanent normal trade relations.

Obama is the host of the APEC gathering, a non-binding forum that draws 21 nations from across a vast Asia-Pacific region.

Obama will be in Honolulu through Tuesday, when he leaves for Australia before ending his trip in Indonesia, the country where he spent several years as a boy, for a security summit of Asian nations.
