Nintendo 3DS to get Recochoku music streaming and download service in Japan, launches in December

Nintendo 3DS gets Recochoku music download service in Japan, launches in December

Today's early Nintendo Direct broadcast didn't have much in the way of new hardware pricing or surprises, but it did reveal a new music service for 3DS users in Japan. The handheld will soon be able to stream, download and play music from Recochoku, a mobile-centric site that specializes in ringtones and track downloads. Users should be able to take their pick from over 1 million titles, priced at around 250 yen. Any songs bought on your 3DS can also be transferred to your (compatible) keitai of choice.

Zillow Adds Pre-Market Inventory to Home Search | Zillow Blog

A housing market bottom this year, and record-low mortgage rates are making homes more affordable than they have been in the past decade.?? Yet inventory of homes on the market has fallen by more than 20 percent over the past year ? meaning many would-be home buyers are having a difficult time finding the right home. Buyers need a leg up in this kind of market, and that?s why today Zillow is excited to introduce pre-market inventory to the home search.

Starting today, home shoppers on Zillow will be able to search for and find rich information on 1.8 million pre-foreclosure and foreclosed properties, for free. These are homes that are not yet listed for sale, nor are they freely available on an MLS or other real estate sites. By giving buyers the ability to find information on homes that are about to come on to the market ? inventory that typically only savvy investors know how to find ? Zillow opens up more choice and opportunities to help buyers find the right home.

Once a buyer finds a pre-market home they are interested in, Zillow helps connect them with a local foreclosure specialist who can help take the next steps toward purchasing the home.
And because buying one of these properties is not your typical transaction, we?ve also created the Zillow Foreclosure Center, which offers has a tremendous amount of? information and how-to guides on buying a distressed property or foreclosed home. Plus, the center also offers tips for homeowners and renters who could be faced with foreclosure.

To see the pre-market inventory in your area, select foreclosed and pre-foreclosure when you start your home search, then sign in to get the full details on these properties.

Myanmar find could flood vintage Spitfire market

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? As many as 140 World War II Spitfire fighter planes ? three to four times the number of airworthy models known to exist ? are believed to be buried in near-pristine condition in Myanmar. A British-Myanmar partnership says it will begin digging them up by the end of the month.

The go-ahead for excavation came earlier this week when the Myanmar government signed an agreement with British aviation enthusiast David J. Cundall and his local partner. Cundall, a farmer and businessman, earlier this year announced he had located 20 of the planes, best known for helping the Royal Air Force win mastery of the skies during the Battle of Britain.

On Thursday, however, a retired Myanmar geology professor who has assisted in the recovery operation since 1999 said there are about 140 Spitfires buried in various places around the Southeast Asian country, which until 1948 was a British colony called Burma. He did not explain the discrepancy in estimates.

Soe Thein said the British brought crates of Spitfires to Myanmar in the closing stages of the war, but never used them when the Japanese gave up the fight in 1945. The single-seat version of the fighter plane was 9.14 meters (30 feet) long with an 11.3 meter (37 foot) wingspan.

The U.S. Army was in charge of burying the planes after British forces decided to dispose of them that way, he said, adding Cundall interviewed at least 1,000 war veterans, mostly American, to gather information about the aircraft's fate.

He said a ground search was started in 1999 using magnetometers and ground radar, but faced difficulties. Only in recent years did technology become advanced enough to be more certain of the finds, he said.

Each plane was kept in a crate about 12.2 meters (40 feet) long, 3.4 meters (11 feet) high and 2.7 meters (9 feet) wide, said Soe Thein.

The plans under a two-year contract are to recover 60 planes in the first phase: 36 planes in Mingaladon, near Yangon's current air base and international airport; 18 in Myitkyina in Kachin state in the north; and six in Meikthila in central Myanmar. Others are to be recovered in a second phase.

The Myanmar government will get one plane for display at a museum, as well as half of the remaining total. DJC, a private company headed by Cundall, will get 30 percent of the total and the Myanmar partner company, Shwe Taung Paw, 20 percent.

British Prime Minister David Cameron eased the way to an agreement when he visited Myanmar President Thein Sein in April.

Cundall has said his quest to find the planes involved 12 trips to Myanmar and cost more than 130,000 pounds ($210,000), not including the planned excavation expenses.

Spitfires in working shape are rare and popular with collectors. In 2009, a restored but airworthy Spitfire was sold by British auction house Bonhams for >1,739,500 ($2,544,130)

The excavation agreement was signed Tuesday by Civil Aviation Director-General Tin Naing Tun, Cundall on behalf of DJC, and Htoo Htoo Zaw, managing director of Shwe Taung Paw.

"It took 16 years for Mr. David Cundall to locate the planes buried in crates. We estimate that there are at least 60 Spitfires buried and they are in good condition," Htoo Htoo Zaw said Wednesday. "We want to let people see these historic fighters, and the excavation of these fighter planes will further strengthen relations between Myanmar and Britain."

The British Embassy on Wednesday described the agreement as a chance to work with Myanmar's new reformist government to restore and display the planes.

"We hope that many of them will be gracing the skies of Britain and as discussed, some will be displayed here in Burma," said an embassy spokesman, who spoke anonymously because he was not directly involved in the excavation agreement.

Myanmar from 1962 until last year was under the rule of the military, which changed the country's name from Burma in 1989. Thein Sein's reformist government has turned away from the repression of the military government and patched up relations with Western nations that had previously shunned it.

The state-owned Myanma Ahlin daily on Wednesday cited Transport Minister Nyan Tun Aung as saying the Spitfire agreement amounts to the British government's recognition of the democratic reforms.

Biden: Romney vague, 'sketchy' at debate

(AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden is dismissing as "rhetoric but not much substance" Mitt Romney's answers to questions at Tuesday night's presidential debate.

"Everything is sketchy," Biden said.

President Barack Obama "had a great debate," Biden said, "and I expect you'll see another great one next Monday" when the two presidential candidates meet for a third and final debate.

Biden also addressed questions over the Obama administration's response to requests for increased security at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed there last month. At last week's vice presidential debate, Biden had asserted "we weren't told" about the requests. But a State Department official had acknowledged during congressional testimony receiving the request.

Biden, who spoke in a round of television interviews broadcast Wednesday, said he meant that he and Obama were not personally aware of those requests. "It never got to us," Biden said.

The vice president also accused Romney of trying to "politicize a tragedy" by continuing to make the Benghazi attack an issue in the campaign.

But Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan said it's a legitimate national security issue.

"We learn more troubling facts by the day, and so that's why need to get to the bottom of this, to get answers so that we can prevent something like this from ever happening again," he told CBS' "This Morning."

Anti-military vibes emerge as vets go to college

By Bill Briggs, NBC News contributor

The insult expressed in the Rutgers University class was aimed at the nearly 1 million veterans enrolled at U.S. schools under the GI Bill. And Scott Hakim, barely a year removed from combat, took the slam personally.

?Why should we pay for these guys to go to college?? Hakim said he recalls a female student asking?during a discussion on the nation?s responsibility to service members returning from war.? ?Everybody who goes into the military is stupid ? that?s why they joined the military instead of going to college.?

John Agnello Photography

Scott Hakim, a Marine infantryman in combat, now attends Rutgers University. The school has a military-friendly reputation. But even there, Hakim says he heard another student bash enrolled veterans. Hakim at a recent wedding with girlfriend Emma Valenti.

Hakim ? a Marine infantryman in Iraq and Afghanistan ? immediately vowed to out-study every classmate on the midterm exam and said he?ultimately posted?the highest mark: 98 out of 100. Later, he said, he overheard that same female student reveal her grade: F.?

?I guess I proved her wrong,? Hakim said. ?It wasn't a me-versus-her thing, more like: Maybe now she realizes how idiotic her statement was.?

Anti-veteran sentiments ? though sporadic and scattered ? are nonetheless emerging at some American colleges just as thousands of veterans enroll with their tuition fees fully covered by the post-9/11 GI Bill. In student gatherings or via anonymous posts in online forums, some university students are expressing open disdain for former service members now massing in academia.

Student Veterans of America, a support network with more than 500 campus chapters, acknowledges the presence of some unwelcoming vibes. ?It exists,? said Michael Dakduk, executive director of SVA. ?But, by and large, college students respect the sacrifices made by those who have served in the military.?

At Columbia University in New York City, a wounded Iraq War veteran was heckled and booed?in February by fellow students as he argued for the return to that school of the Reserve Officers? Training Corps, or ROTC, during a campus meeting. That reaction angered the national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, who openly questioned the school?s leadership.

At the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, student veteran Jason Thigpen said he has ?personally experienced what seems to be ?anti-veteran? sentiment on more than a few occasions.?

Courtesy of Scott Hakim

Scott Hakim served with the U.S. Marines in Iraq and again in Afghanistan, where he was wounded by an IED in 2010.

?I had a History 101 professor in 2011 actually refer to how much better he was than military service members,? said Thigpen, an Army National Guard member who served in Iraq through January 2010. The UNC ?system seems to disregard us in such a widespread manner, most student veterans no longer bother to even admit their time in-service, which is just sad.?

UNC, Wilmington spokeswoman?Janine Iamunno responded:?"UNC Wilmington proudly offers veterans, active-duty members of the military, and their families several programs and resources to support their unique educational needs. This is an extension of our commitment to? the journey of learning, and to the premium we place on an open dialogue between faculty and students about the opportunities and challenges we face individually and as a community."

At Rutgers, meanwhile, there is irony attached to the unfriendly dig uttered in one of Hakim?s classes. That sort of behavior is well out of the norm, he said: ?Other than that one time, Rutgers has been absolutely amazing.? In Afghanistan, Hakim?s vehicles ran over and detonated five IEDs. On a sixth occasion, he stepped on an IED, sustaining a traumatic brain injury. ?If I have to miss a class (due to the injury), my professors are accommodating. The whole school itself is great with veterans.?

"Rutgers, like the rest of the country, has successfully been able to separate the warrior from the war," said?Steve Abel, a retired Army colonel and director of the office of veteran military programs and services at Rutgers.

More on military topics at NBCNews.com

"I was on a college campus around the time of (the) Kent State (shootings). I'm a product of the Vietnam era. So when I was driving here (a couple of years ago to start the job), I wondered: What is Rutgers going to be like from a staff and student body perspective, being a big and liberal university?" Abel said. "Any apprehension I had about that relationship absolutely dissolved when I got here. They could not have been more welcoming to me, my team and to the student veterans here."

In fact, Rutgers was rated a ?military friendly? school in?the 2013 ?G.I. Jobs? list?of colleges where veterans feel appreciated and have an array of academic and social help available.

Last month, when NBC News reported on the latest list of ?military friendly? schools, several readers offered comments via newsvine.com that derided the nation's newest?veterans.

?This post-9/11 love affair with the military is disgusting. Paying people to illegally invade other countries and kill innocent men, women and children is immoral. Screw the military,? wrote a reader who calls herself OVUgirl.

?I have to agree with OVUgirl. Seeing the immoral military glorified on campus is disgusting,? wrote another reader who uses the newsvine handle Gandhi Fan.

Through newsvine, NBC News asked both of those readers to elaborate on their comments for this story. Neither responded.

?I don?t think you?ll see (those types of feelings expressed) as overtly on the ground at college campuses,? said SVA leader Dakduk. ?But ...?you can say things anonymously online ? you can say pretty much everything ? so that?s where you?ll see it most.?

Another leading veterans group suspects that some student veterans who blatantly grab GI Bill money with no plans to actually sit in a college classroom are further fueling that ill will.

Under the post-9/11 GI Bill, the federal government directly reimburses colleges for a veteran?s tuition fees. In addition, each student veteran receives a housing allowance that, depending on the university?s zip code, can run as high as $2,040 per month if the veteran has dependents. They also each get $1,000 annually for books and supplies.

?What happens is that too many of the people get the GI Bill and don?t go to class. They spend the money elsewhere and the college has to cut them loose,? said John E. Pickens III, executive director of?VeteransPlus, a?nonprofit that has offered financial counseling to more than 150,000 current and former service members.?

?That?s one of the issues that kind of took us by surprise,? he added. ?When we go to these colleges and ask: How can we help? That?s one of the things we hear from the student advisers: ?Look, I?ve got kids who come here and enroll to get their GI Bill and they end up not going to school.'?

?Unfortunately," Pickens said, "you have some folks who game the system."?

Q&A with Scott Fox, author of Internet Riches

A 2007 survey showed that nearly half of American workers aren?t satisfied with their jobs. What do you feel is holding people back from going into business for themselves?

People give their hesitation lots of names but it basically boils down to fear. I wrote Internet Riches precisely to help people overcome these fears. Starting an e-business today is much easier, much cheaper, and requires much less technology expertise than most people realize.

Unfortunately fear of failure, fear of embarrassment, fear that the learning curve is too steep, fear that there will not be a payoff for their work, fear that they cannot afford to do it, fear that they won?t be able to live up to their own expectations or the needs of the business combine to keep many people from even trying. It?s sad but true that in an effort to be ?rational?, these fears often combine to create a self-image where a person can?t imagine themselves building a successful e-business.

The problem is that this fear is based on an outdated 20th century understanding of the risks required to start your own business. As thousands of my readers have found, if you update your assumptions to reflect the realities of how easy it is to start your own business in the Internet Age, the conclusions change dramatically and in your favor.

The facts are plain: online markets are continuing to grow explosively, the costs of the equipment and infrastructure have dropped dramatically, the flexibility of working from home on a part-time basis means that people don?t have to quit their full-time jobs to pursue online success, and the great upside available to people who own their own small businesses have all combined to completely change the risk/reward equation.

Based on your research and experience, what areas have the most potential for growth in the coming years?

I?d put these opportunities in 3 buckets: The first bucket is filled with the obvious growth opportunities such as international markets and the mobile web (By this I mean the evolution of e-commerce into mobile commerce on your handheld device). Continuing explosive growth in these markets offers major profit opportunities.

The second bucket is the mining of niche markets. Because the Internet lets people communicate more easily than was possible in the 20th century, we are seeing the rapid emergence of millions of micro communities based on niche interests. This means that almost any hobby or issue can be used as the basis for a community of like-minded individuals. And anywhere there is a community, there is a market for goods and services which solve the problems faced by that community. The Internet allows entrepreneurs greater ability to service these niche markets cost-effectively than ever was possible before the Internet.

The third area of opportunity is the hardest to quantify but the most explosive: This is where entrepreneurs find new and unexpected ways to exploit the efficiencies of the Web to create new products, services, and markets. When one of these ideas finds particular success, it can spread like wildfire across the web and create very profitable new businesses very quickly. The big success stories like Facebook are very well covered by the media but there are thousands of smaller, millionaire-making e-businesses emerging all the time.

The benefits of starting a niche company are many; work from home, mesh passions with profits, be your own boss, etc. However, what potential pitfalls do niche market businesses need to look out for?

Getting ahead of yourself is probably the most common trap that I see for entrepreneurs. Especially because so many ?get rich quick? gurus promise unrealistic returns, entrepreneurs can get hurt by diving too deeply, too quickly into their new passion. So, although one of the best parts of starting a business is turning your own enthusiasm into a revenue generator, this enthusiasm can also blind you to possible flaws in your approach.

Three ways to reduce these risks are:

1. Do your research. This means thoroughly investigating the competition (both online and off), pricing the goods and services needed for operations, and setting a realistic budget up-front for both your money and your time.
2. Take advantage of the new e-business paradigm by keeping your costs down, especially at first. Try a few versions of your business model to learn what works the best. Wait until you have found the most profitable approaches before signing any long term contracts or investing heavily in a new venture. In other words, don?t quit your day job until you have evidence that your new web site can lead to the pay-off you?re targeting.
3. Manage your time, relationships, and expectations with extra care during the start-up period. It can be hard on your family and relationships if you are suddenly working two jobs at once. Just as with your financial budget, you should develop a time line for your projects. Discuss this plan, and its associated trade-offs, with your family to get them on board, too.
These steps can help you keep your enthusiasm from overwhelming your good business sense. They can also help preserve your capital until it can be used most effectively.

You state that venture capital is no longer needed for today?s internet start-up. Is this a product of cheaper technology, gun-shy investors, or both?

Venture capital can still be appropriate for capital-intensive ventures or to accelerate an already growing business. But for the niche entrepreneurs reading Internet Riches, it?s rarely needed because all the competition among technology service providers has so significantly lowered the costs and risks of starting an online business.

This trend is driven by competition in the technology sector, not just on the prices of hardware but also on the costs and ease of use of software, plus the economies of scale enabled by the Internet?s penetration into daily life and business operations worldwide.

For example, technologies that 10 years ago required tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars and an IT engineering team on staff are now available to small businesses in easier to use web-based versions for a small monthly fee. Server maintenance, software upgrades, and tech support are included. This used to be called Application Service Providers (ASPs) but the latest buzzword is SaaS (Software as a Service). Companies can also source goods with increasing efficiency, pricing transparency helps lower prices, and there are more people online shopping than ever before. These trends combine to lower costs, speed up time to market and increase the profit potential of any new e-business venture.

Cheaper, more efficient and easier-to-use technology has also greatly reduced the costs of infrastructure for setting up a new e-business. Now entrepreneurs can work from home, in their spare time, and not have to invest in office space, parking, furniture, insurance, signage, etc. etc. Most of those ?real world? costs that were required to start a business in the 20th century have been eliminated for today?s Internet entrepreneurs.

Technology advancements have also revolutionized advertising. Services like Google?s Adsense/Adwords and Yahoo?s Search Marketing Solutions allow any business to advertise cost-effectively to consumers worldwide from a desktop PC. At the same time, those services can make money for entrepreneurs because they will place paid advertising on even the smallest, newest of web sites for no up-front cost. This gives any niche entrepreneur access to a potential advertising revenue stream previously only available to companies that owned newspapers, TV stations or radio programs.

If a business is less expensive to run, its products are cheaper to deliver and faster to market, and its advertising budget is more cost-effective, then it will also need less capital to get started. The combination of all these increased efficiencies and lower costs means a LOT less risk for entrepreneurs, and therefore less need for venture capital to sustain the business until revenues get started. Entrepreneurs can instead focus on growing their businesses instead of on technology support or on raising money that they may not need. Sorry, venture capitalists!

How important is search engine optimization (SEO) to a budding business?

SEO is a key strategy for marketing success, both for online and ?real world? businesses.

In my seminars, I often say ?Search engines are the Yellow Pages of the 21st century.? You wouldn?t traditionally have started a business without listing your phone number in the phone book would you?

Online is increasingly where the consumers are, so your business needs to be there as highly ranked as possible to attract as much traffic as possible. Today you can pay for prominent listings, just like in the days of the Yellow Pages? dominance. But you can also get good search engine display ?organically? for free. This means carefully crafting your web pages? appearance, copy, and keywords to attract a high ranking from Google and Yahoo.

Often overlooked is the increasing importance of search engines for ?real world? businesses, too. If you have a real world business based on local marketing (like a chiropractor or dry cleaner) you may not need a constantly updated e-commerce web site. But you should put up a basic ?brochure? web site that is optimized for search engines. As everyone spends more time connected to the Web, you?ll want to be easily discoverable by your local customers online, too.

Internet Riches has three chapters about online marketing tactics for small business. These ?No Budget Online Marketing Secrets,? ?Small Budget Online Marketing Secrets,? and ?Real Budget Online Marketing Secrets? chapters discuss ?pull? marketing tactics like free organic search engine optimization, as well as ?push? marketing techniques like keyword advertising and email newsletter publishing that can help any small business grow its online profitability.

Aggregation of proteins in cells may result in diseases

Monday, October 15, 2012

Many diseases are caused by proteins losing their natural three-dimensional structure and thus their function. In most cases, the damaged proteins are degraded by different systems in the cells, but in some cases, the proteins begin to aggregate and form very well-organised rope-like structures called fibrils. These structures have now been linked to many different diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, type 2 diabetes and corneal dystrophies (opaqueness in the cornea).

It has long been known that corneal dystrophy is caused by a mutation of a protein called TGFBIp in the cornea. This causes the protein to aggregate over a number of years, which finally makes the cornea opaque, eventually leading to blindness. Corneal dystrophy is hereditary, and there is currently no treatment for this disease. The only alternative is a corneal transplant, but even after a transplant, some patients experience a recurrence of the symptoms. It is therefore important to find a reason for this aggregation, and this is what the Aarhus researchers have just accomplished.

High amounts of TGFBIp protein are damaging

The research team studied the protein that causes corneal dystrophy, and they found that the mutation of the protein changes its stability. When the protein involved in corneal dystrophy is present in low amounts, the change from a protein with a natural structure to well-organised fibrils is a slow process, and it takes place via several different intermediate stages. In this case, the cell damage is minimal. However, when protein is present in larger quantities, the change from a protein with a natural structure to fibrils is very rapid and involves very few and well-defined intermediate stages. On the other hand, this leads to extensive cell damage.

With these studies, the researchers gained unique insight into how the amount of protein in solution can determine the mechanism underlying the formation of well-organised protein fibrils.

The results may explain why some diseases with a prevalence of fibrils result in cell death, while others do not. With this knowledge, it might be possible in the future to prevent this aggregation of damaging proteins by developing drugs for the treatment of corneal dystrophy.

Sitting for protracted periods increases risk of diabetes, heart disease and death

ScienceDaily (Oct. 14, 2012) ? A new study led by the University of Leicester, in association with colleagues at Loughborough University, has discovered that sitting for long periods increases your risk of diabetes, heart disease and death.

The study, which combined the results of 18 studies and included a total of 794,577 participants, was led by Dr. Emma Wilmot, a research fellow in the Diabetes Research Group at the University of Leicester. The research was in collaboration with colleagues from the newly established National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Leicester-Loughborough Diet, Lifestyle and Physical Activity Biomedical Research Unit and was published in Diabetologia, the journal of the European Association of the Study of Diabetes.

The research showed that those who sat for long periods of time have a higher chance in their risk of diabetes, heart-disease and death. Interestingly, the results were independent of any individual physical exercise undertaken, suggesting that even if an individual meets the physical activity guidelines, their health may still be at risk if they sit for long periods of time during the day.

Dr Wilmot, a Clinical Research Fellow in Diabetes and Endocrinology based at the Leicester Diabetes Centre, Leicester General Hospital said that on average an adult spends 50-70% of their time sitting down, by limiting the time spent sitting, the risk of diabetes, heart disease and death can be reduced.

It is important to take breaks from long periods of sitting down, such as taking a walk during your lunch break and taking a break from work at the computer by placing your laptop on a filing cabinet.

Euro zone mulls new ways to cut Greek debt

TOKYO (Reuters) - Euro zone officials are considering new ways to reduce Greece's huge debt because delays in reforms by Athens and continued recession have put the target of 120 percent debt to GDP ratio in 2020 out of reach, euro zone officials said.

A Greek debt sustainability analysis prepared by the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank and the European Commission in March forecast Greek debt would rise to 164 percent of GDP in 2013 from around 160 percent in 2012 under a baseline scenario, assuming the Greek economy stopped contracting next year.

But Greece now expects its economy to shrink for the sixth year running in 2013, eyeing a 3.8 percent contraction that would boost its debt ratio to 179.3 percent.

"At the moment it looks like Greece's debt level will rise to well above the target of 120 percent of GDP by 2020," ECB Executive Board member Joerg Asmussen told the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.

To bring it back towards the desired level in 2020, Greece could organize voluntary buy-backs of its bonds, he said.

"One has to consider elements that could make it possible to achieve that goal. One possibility would be buying back debt," Asmussen said.

The money could not come from the ECB, but it could be lent by the European Stability Mechanism, for example, one senior euro zone official, who was in Tokyo for the weekend meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, said.

Because Greek bonds trade at very deep discounts, one euro of money borrowed from the ESM, the euro zone's permanent bailout fund, could reduce Greek debt by 1.5 euros, offering good leverage, the official said.

Another ECB Executive Board member, Benoit Coeure, said the central bank would not consider rescheduling the Greek debt portfolio it held -- a suggestion repeatedly made by Athens.

A second euro zone official said that while borrowing from the ESM would in itself increase Greek debt, there was another way to reduce it.

"What could change the overall level of debt is that, at some later stage, when banks can be directly recapitalized by the ESM, we could convert some of the euro zone loans for bank recapitalization into equity and this could help the debt ratio, but this is not going to happen before the end of next year," the second official said.

The euro zone's temporary bailout fund, the European Financial Stability Facility, has already lent Greece 25 billion euros to recapitalize banks, and 23 billion more is awaiting disbursement.

The 48 billion euros would be a sizeable chunk of Greece's total debt, currently estimated at around 330 billion euros.

Athens could also use proceeds from the privatization of state-owned assets to retire debt, the second official said.

"Another way could be to use privatization receipts to buy back debt," the official said. "The privatization process is finally kicking in, the structure is ready. You could expect a few billion euros from privatization to buy back debt. This could happen relatively quickly."

The debt sustainability analysis from March estimated Greek privatization revenues by 2020 at 45 billion euros, with 12 billion coming in 2012-2014.

The IMF is pushing for euro zone governments to restructure the debt that Athens owes to them -- almost 53 billion euros lent under Greece's first bailout program and 14.4 billion already disbursed under a second bailout.

The euro zone could also further lower interest on the loans for the first program, which now stands at 150 basis points, or lengthen the loan maturities or increase the moratorium time when interest does not have to be serviced.

But officials said there was very little appetite among euro zone countries for a restructuring of official sector loans to Greece.

To help Greece return to growth, the euro zone and the IMF are discussing giving Athens an extra two years to reach a primary surplus of 4.5 percent of GDP, pushing back the date to 2016.

Greece has said two extra years in financing would cost 13 billion to 15 billion euros and officials said the euro zone realizes it will need to come up with the money.

But no decision on the financing has been reached yet.

(AP) ? U.S. officials say the U.S. knew that Mexican marines had killed the head of the widely feared Zetas drug cartel before the body was stolen in a pre-dawn raid from a Mexican funeral home.

One official says the U.S. independently verified the identity of Zeta founder and leader Heriberto Lazcano, killed in a shootout Sunday afternoon in a northern Mexican town, before his body was stolen at gunpoint early Monday.

The account throws into question the Mexican navy's insistence that marines left Lazcano's body unguarded because they thought they had killed a common criminal. They only later discovered from finger prints on the body that it was Lazcano, the navy said.

Both U.S. officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.

Workday skyrockets in 1st day trading on NYSE

NEW YORK (AP) ? Shares of Workday rocketed higher Friday in their first day of trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Trading under the "WDAY" symbol, the stock climbed $20.69, or 74 percent, to close at $48.69. That's the fifth-biggest percentage gain on the first day of trading for any IPO this year, and the largest jump since software maker Splunk Inc.'s April debut.

Workday Inc. raised $637 million in its initial public stock offering, selling 22.8 million shares for $28 each. That signaled strong demand from investors, since the company expected that shares would price from $24 to $26 per share.

Workday's software helps companies keep track of payroll and other human resources functions. It competes with giant corporations in enterprise software like Oracle Corp. and SAP AG. Workday's applications are accessible over the Internet, so companies do not have to upgrade software residing on their own computers as improvements roll out. This kind of software is kept on computers outside a company's offices and accessed online. Called "cloud computing," it is becoming more popular with business customers.

Proceeds from the IPO will go toward general business purposes and possibly acquisitions, the Pleasanton, Calif., company said.

While a string of technology IPOs last year and earlier this year revved up the IPO market, the flop of Facebook Inc.'s debut in May and growing uncertainty about the world economy had weighed on deals this summer. In the fourth quarter, however, IPOs seem to have become more attractive for investors.

There were nine deals this week, seven of which closed Friday above their IPO price.

Handling Shadow Addictions!

Have you ever heard of the term Shadow Addiction? Shadow Addictions are becoming incredibly and increasingly more common in our society. The spike in the number of younger therapy clients coming to me with shadow addictions inspired this tip.

First, let?s clarify what an addiction is. Psychology Today gives a great overview of addiction, stating, ?Addiction is a condition that results when a person ingests a substance [alcohol, cocaine, nicotine] or engages in an activity [gambling] that can be pleasurable but the continued use of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work or relationships, even health. Users may not be aware that their behavior is out of control and causing problems for themselves and others.? It goes on to explain different types of addictions and the biology and chemistry behind them and how to seek out treatments plans. I encourage you to take a look.

While shadow addiction is a form of addiction, it is, on the surface, socially acceptable. It does not necessarily interfere with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work or relationships, even health, as stated in the definition above, but that does not mean the behavior is not negatively impacting quality of life.

When we think of ?addicts??whether it is gambling, sex, drugs, alcohol, food, exercise, etc.?we think of a person whose compulsive behavior is out of control and obvious. A shadow addiction, on the other hand, does not necessarily debilitate the sufferer, but the effect it has on relationships and sense of self and overall functioning is real and, left unchecked, can lead to a full-blown addiction.

The real question about any mood-altering activity is: Are you controlling the behavior or is it controlling you?

For clarity, let?s use exercise as an example. An addiction to exercise could be working out five hours a day in a bulimic-type fashion. The shadow addiction might present as exercising for an hour a day, every day, and needing to get in that hour. If the quality of your entire day is ruined if circumstances arise not allowing you to exercise, that extreme response is out of balance. On the surface, exercising an hour a day seems healthy, and you may admire someone who possesses such a high level of motivation, but quality of life is impaired if that hour a day is a compulsion. The high level of emotional distress that accompanies deviating from the prescribed schedule indicates a shadow addiction.

A therapist friend recently told me a story that illustrates shadow addictions perfectly. She said she had a client who came to her saying she had a drinking problem. When she inquired how much the client was drinking daily, the client replied, ?I have one Scotch nightly.? When the therapist seemed a little confused, the client went on to say, ?But every other minute of the day, I think about taking that drink.? You can see how this is a problem.

I quit drinking when I was twenty-one. I have an addictive personality and background, so I am very aware of my own shadow addiction tendencies. Although I stopped drinking young, my struggle with transferring that addiction to other behaviors has been a lifelong challenge. I can still easily get sucked into mood-altering activities from compulsively training for a triathlon to being inflexible about a vegan diet, which binds anxiety about other things.

My heightened awareness of my addictive nature challenges me to skip working out and choose a lazy Sunday with my husband once in a while to maintain a healthy balance. Trust me, if I were not vigilant, I would be actively addicted to many things. But I do the hard work of checking in, staying in therapy, and keeping an open dialogue with my friend and addiction expert Patty Powers, because I love my sweet life.

What are your shadow addictions? What behaviors negatively impact the quality of your life?

The most common shadow addictions I see in my practice are alcohol, social drug use, technology, sex, and exercise.

If I said you were going to do a thirty-day cleanse starting now and you could not engage in your chosen shadow addiction behavior, would you be able to do it? How does the thought of it make you feel? This is an opportunity for you to dig deep and get real with yourself. Having an addict?s mind, I know intimately the frightening power of denial as a defense. Why wait until something bad happens to wake up in your life? Now is the time.

As they say in addiction circles: Anything you put above your recovery you lose. In the case of shadow addictions, it might be more accurate to say: Anything you put above being fully present in your life suffers.

What is suffering in your life right now?

I would love to know how you feel about this topic, so please drop a comment! I am here to help.

I hope you have an amazing week, filled with relaxed joy and pleasure, and, as always, take care of you.

Love love love

96% Searching for Sugar Man

All Critics (95) | Top Critics (28) | Fresh (91) | Rotten (4)

The search for a long-lost pop icon has an unexpected payoff.

[A] moving, lyrical account ...

Director Malik Bendjelloul's engaging, cleverly structured documentary about the legendary folk singer Rodriguez is shaped like a mystery.

If you like music, a good mystery or, better yet, a combination of both, you won't be disappointed.

An electrifying illustration of music's power to inspire and change lives on both sides of the footlights.

Submitted for your approval: one Sixto Rodriguez, a Mexican-American singer/songwriter whom Rod Serling would surely embrace, in or out of the Twilight Zone.

A soulful, lip-tremblingly joyous movie that's one of the more affecting experiences I've had in a cinema this year.

Engrossing even when it's a little unfocused.

One of the most bizarre pop music documentaries ever...a singularly fascinating true-life tale that many of its participants still find difficult to believe.

...it isn't merely the content that makes Searching for Sugar Man so affecting: it's the way that Swedish filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul sets up the story and peels away the mystery of Rodriguez, one layer at time.

A mystery as compelling as any fictional detective story.

The first half of this film is mysterious whereas the second half is wonderfully inspiring. It's proof that truth really is stranger than fiction.

This is a fine documentary; insightful and entertaining with a genteel approach to uncovering a figure so close to the hearts of an unexpected fan base.
