Boot Camp w/MBC | Malden Sports & Recreation and Outdoor ...

Donated to Malden and Melrose by former Malden Mayor Elisha Converse, Pine Banks is an expansive natural parkland on the border of the two towns. Picnic pavilions line the trails and walkways in the park, although a permit is required to use these spaces or to build a fire. There are also several athletic fields in the park.

Obama Blames GOP for Lagging Housing Crisis

Citing historically low mortgages, President Barack Obama is pressing Republicans to back housing policies the White House says would help struggling homeowners refinance their debts and prevent foreclosures.

Obama is blaming congressional Republicans for not passing legislation he proposed in February that would lower lending rates for millions of borrowers who have not been able to get out from under burdensome mortgages. Republicans have objected, citing among other things the estimated $5 billion to $10 billion cost of the proposal.

"Here we are ? seven months later ? still waiting on Congress to act," Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address.

Congress has recessed and is not scheduled to return until after the November elections.

"Instead of worrying about you, they'd already gone home to worry about their campaigns," the president said.

Obama's push comes as home prices have been rising across the United States. National home prices increased 1.2 percent in July, compared with the same month last year, according to the Standard & Poor's/Case Shiller index released Tuesday.

In the Republican weekly address, Arizona congressional candidate Vernon Parker said the U.S. corporate tax rate is pushing jobs overseas. He said he agrees with GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, "that we need to stop all the looming tax hikes and develop a pro-growth tax code that brings jobs home and keeps jobs here."

He also called for the repeal of Obama's healthcare law.

Groupon?s Leadership Shuffle Continues: New North American Sales VP Named To Replace Muhr, Who Now Heads EMEA

Groupon-Logo1The churn at Groupon's executive level continues apace. The company has just announced that it has appointed a new vice president for North America, Rob Kilgarriff, who is taking over the role from Chris Muhr. Earlier today Reuters reported that Chris Muhr was being shipped out to Europe, where he had first started his career with Groupon, to become the new SVP for the Europe, Middle East and Africa as the daily deals company looks to fix its flagging European business. Muhr has replaced Veit Dengler, who had joined from Dell only in April to take up the reigns as the Sawmer brothers began their gradual stepping away from management roles at the company. (The Sawmers' CityDeal, acquired by Groupon, forms the basis of Groupon's European operation.) Kilgarriff will report to SVP of global operations Kal Raman.

Animals suspected in spread of new virus

(AP) ? Britain's Health Protection Agency has published an early genetic sequence of the new respiratory virus related to SARS that shows it is most closely linked to bat viruses, and scientists say camels, sheep or goats might end up being implicated too.

So far, officials have only identified two confirmed cases and say the virus isn't as infectious as SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, which killed hundreds of people, mostly in Asia, in a 2003 global outbreak.

In Geneva, World Health Organization spokesman Glenn Thomas told reporters Friday that so far the signs are that the virus is "not easily transmitted from person to person" ? but analyses are ongoing. The agency said it's too early to tell how big a threat the new virus will be since it is unknown how exactly it spreads and whether it will evolve into a more dangerous form.

Global health officials suspect two victims from the Middle East may have caught it from animals.

"It's a logical possibility to consider any animals present in the region in large numbers," said Ralph Baric, a coronavirus expert at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "Biologists now need to go into the area and take samples from any animals they can get their hands on, including camels and goats," he said. Baric said it was crucial to find out how widespread the virus is in animals and what kind of contact might be risky for people.

Baric suggested bats might be spreading the virus directly to humans since the two confirmed infections happened months apart. "If there was an established transmission pattern from other animals, we probably would have seen a lot more cases," he said.

WHO said it is considering the possibility the new coronavirus sickened humans after direct contact with animals. The agency is now working with experts in the Middle East to figure out how the two confirmed cases got infected but could not share details until the investigation was finished.

One patient was a Saudi Arabian man who died several months ago while the other is a Qatari national who traveled to Saudi Arabia before falling ill and is currently in critical but stable condition in a London hospital.

Earlier this week, WHO issued a global alert asking doctors to be on guard for any potential cases of the new respiratory virus, which also causes kidney failure.

Saudi officials have already warned that next month's annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage, which brings millions to Saudi Arabia from all around the world, could allow the virus to spread. As a precautionary measure, they are advising pilgrims to keep their hands clean and wear masks in crowded places.

Experts said knowing where a virus comes from provides clues on how to stop it.

"This means we could prevent the fire before it starts instead of rushing towards it with fire trucks and water hoses afterwards," said Michael Osterholm, an infectious diseases expert at the University of Minnesota.

Osterholm said it was possible bats had simply passed on the virus from other animals and that there could be a complicated transmission chain that ultimately ended in humans.

Viruses reproduce as they infect animals and people, giving them more chances to evolve into a deadlier version.

"We don't know enough about coronaviruses to predict which mutations might make them more lethal or transmissible," Osterholm said. "But you don't want to tempt genetic fate with microbes because you're bound to lose most times."

What Comes After Social Networking - Milwaukee Business ...

By Elliot James

I sometimes try to ask myself what the next great factor will turn out to be online. Since the outset of the substantial utilization of the internet in the 90's, there have been a couple important developments that have altered the arena of website marketing.

The earliest innovation was Google. There were a lot of search engines in the beginning of the web but it was not a lengthy period of time before "google" was a verb and Google was gobbling up over 80% search volume on the web. They are continually in takeover form and working closer to total domination of internet search and maximizing their market share in a few other industries like mobile phones. Watching precisely what Google is working on is a crucial process for anybody who needs to promote on the web.

The next significant innovation was the expansion of web-based streaming video and YouTube. As a result of faster internet speeds becoming more widely accessible, streaming video was accessible and YouTube grew virally mainly because of the simplicity of adding and sharing your own movies. Currently a web-site is not worth squat if it does not have some sort of video to advertise a product or service.

The most recent discovery is still progressing. You guessed it! It's social networking. First it was MySpace, then Facebook and Twitter. The expansion of Facebook and Twitter have been enough to challenge the absolute control of Google, Yahoo, and Bing and shift the manner in which internet surfers spend their time spent online. At this point, an enterprise would be foolish not to ever use Twitter, Facebook, and other social marketing strategies while promoting their venture.

People that predicted these breakthrough discoveries or created them on their own are now extremely rich. People that were prepared to speedily make use of these breakthroughs are reaping the rewards of being adaptive and ready to adapt to an ever-changing internet. Here are a couple of basic questions and ideas to be prepared for the future development on the web.

The Growth of Cellular

Many people are now surfing utilizing their phones and ipads. Site owners must adjust to generate web-sites that are mobile accessible. As use of mobile browsers expands, this will continue to become more and more fundamental. As web developers make their images smaller - mobile displays are getting bigger with tablets more popular. This problem may have been restricted to only a handful of years when mobile phones had really small displays. Regardless, with smartphone browsing on the rise, it's important that site visitors can view your content very easily.

Disappearance of Keyboard and Mouse

When you see people using computers in films set in future decades, they are never making use of a keyboard and mouse. They are frequently making use of some type of multi-screen hologram or speech triggered program. It's likely to happen it's simply a matter of when. So exactly what does this really mean for web entrepreneurs? What should it entail for search engine marketing? Voice search is without a doubt becoming more popular with mobile so online marketers should consider search phrases that are spoken as opposed to entered. The resulting key words could be the very same but usually there is a big difference in spoken word and typed-out key phrases. This is also very crucial for technologies organizations and creators of new products. A lot of income has been generated marketing keyboards and mice over the last several years but they may be on their way out before long.

Google Never Ending

Will there ever be a better manner in which to locate things via the internet rather than typing a search phrase into a search engine (or performing a voice search)? I've been wracking my brain trying to think about what will come after Google and I cannot think of it. One development in the past few years is customized advertising. Google continues to be on the leading edge of this concept. They have so much access to user activity online that they can effortlessly individualize adverts to target advertisements to consumers that have displayed need for these things. This doesn't indicate search will change necessarily yet it may indicate that individuals will take less precious time searching in google and significantly more time simply clicking appropriate advertisements on websites. In any case, it's revenue for Google so they don't care.

Many individuals don't worry about looking towards the next significant technology achievement in computer and online technology but individuals who do can reap the benefit of being the first movers.

Helping the littlest patients fight cancer ? The Chart - CNN.com Blogs

Editor's note: In the Human Factor, we profile survivors who have overcome the odds. Confronting a life obstacle ? injury, illness or other hardship ? they tapped their inner strength and found resilience they didn't know they possessed.

This week we meet a young man who will graduate from Temple University at age 19.? Fabien?Navidi-Kasmai?is a survivor of both childhood cancer and cancer treatment. The chemotherapy and radiation led to nausea and changes in his palate, making the foods he loved inedible - if he felt like eating at all. ?His mother's challenge was to find healthy foods he would like to eat, so he could stay in the fight.? The recipes mother and son developed together can now be found in their cookbook, "Happily Hungry." ?They hope it will help other children and their families survive the treatments designed to kill cancer.

From Fabien Navidi-Kasmai:

In Farsi, they call yogurt "mast."? It isn't spelled like that though, because well, people who speak Farsi write in Farsi, but it's pronounced like "must."

From a young age I've loved mast. My grandma would dice cucumbers and put them in mast, we would put mast on rice, and add honey to mast as a sweet, healthy dessert. ?I've even been told stories about how when I was two years old I would demand "more mast!" and my American grandfather would keel over laughing.

When I was 11, cancer brought the relationship to a whole new level of commitment. Chemotherapy ripped apart my stomach, to the point that I could no longer eat breakfast in the morning or enjoy a delicious slice of lasagna because of the acidity of tomatoes (which was quite a tragedy because I also love lasagna).

However, mast remained loyal to my intestines, never causing an argument and gently comforting my throat when I had the appetite for a bowl. It was a cold, soothing snack for when my body was sent into hot flashes because of (the chemotherapy drug) Vincristine, and an easy bit of nutrition after being pumped full of?(anti-nausea drug) Zofran.? And in all honesty, it was a motivating amount of probiotics when I was declared medically F.O.S. (Full of ... stool).

It's hard to eat during chemo, because when you aren't throwing up, you're not necessarily hungry either.? The times you do want to eat become extremely valuable, and you have to take advantage of the appetite.? I didn't realize it at the time, but craving mast made complete sense - my insides were a battlefield, and yogurt was the perfect way to put out the fire.? To this day I love yogurt, and would take a bowl of it over nearly any other treat anytime.

In my battle against cancer, mast was a must.

From Fabien's mother, Danielle Navidi:

It was my son, Fabien, who said it. We were sitting around the dinner table like many other families.? But we weren't like any other family because a few months prior, we received the devastating diagnosis that Fabien, our 11-year-old, had Hodgkin's lymphoma, Stage III. ?The weeks and months of stress and turbulence that followed in his treatment included surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, blood transfusions, endless scans, and finally, remission.

Here we were, our family of five intact, and somehow we had made it through the storm.?? He said: "This is my new favorite soup, Mom. It tastes like someone is taking care of me."

His words, sweet and simple, took on a new meaning for me.? There was actual truth to what he said. We've heard "You are what you eat," or rather, my preference, "You are what they ate."? Food is an integral part of all cultures and there is science behind why some foods are good for us and others are not.

I pondered why people get cravings for certain foods, why others cannot tolerate some foods and why we find comfort in familiar dishes.? And then, when the months of treatment were over and we were all home with no more hospital stays on the horizon, the work of healing, restoring health - both physical and psychological - began. ?There was no prescription for that, I learned quickly.

So on instinct and a lot of reading and research on my own, I began to rebuild the tired, worn, depressed body of my young cancer survivor.? I took care of him with soups, broths, vegetables, dishes from ancient times and modern times, and experimented with new ways to satisfy sweet cravings.

This commitment to healing him with foods led me to pursue a master of science in nutrition, and to teach cooking classes and conduct cooking demonstrations in numerous venues, including botanical gardens, schools and at The Children's Cancer Foundation Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Here at the hospital, we launched a unique nutrition program that teaches and counsels pediatric oncology patients and their families about the benefits of healthy food choices.

Our cookbook was designed for the little ones fighting hard to get well again, for families and caregivers whose child is in or has completed cancer treatment and for those looking for healthful, smart food choices appealing to kids' tastes.

At a time when every bite counts, it is often impossible to coax even the smallest spoonful into the patient. Knowing what to shop for, what to cook, or how to identify the right kinds of foods that will best support this difficult time is an added challenge.? And yet, successful cancer treatment is dependent on a patient who is prepared to stay on schedule.? Eating well, drinking healthful broths, teas, smoothies and soups all are integral parts of the treatment and recovery protocol.

Treatment causes nausea, impaired taste buds, weakness and pain, fatigue, dehydration, mouth and throat sores, immune-compromised issues, weight loss and a damaged digestive system.? Flavor, smell, color, texture and the hidden gems of optimal nutrition must come together and begin the magical powers of healing.

Yes. I am reading 50 Shades of Grey. Part 1. | AMNAR

Yesterday, I finally caved in. I decided to read 50 Shades of Grey.

?WHY?? I hear all the sane readers with taste demanding.

Well? because I?m really curious about it. This isn?t just an ?everybody?s reading it? thing, either. It?s become The Feminist Issue In Literature, and I?ve seen a lot of opinions on it. I?ve seen a lot of toing and froing about the book, and I?ve even heard about it being burned because it?s apparently responsible for brainwashing women somehow.

I?d like to have an opinion on the book. This is partly because I?m a woman, partly because I?m a feminist, and partly because I?m a human being. I have to admit, I am massively curious about what could outsell Harry Potter on such an epic scale. If you?d asked me what could do that so easily, I?d have answered ?porn?. But nobody asked.

Now, I don?t usually read porn. Or watch porn. Or take much of interest in porn. I?m sure I?d have more readers if I did. I have put sex scenes in my own books, but for the last while I?ve had anhedonia, which is gives you the sex drive of the average rock. Stonehenge has more interest in it right now.

I don?t know if that gives me more or less insight, but I suppose I could consider it a challenge. Mostly, I think if something is being discussed that much, especially explicitly saying it has an impact on women and their lives (which is often what you read in reference to 50 Shades), then I should probably pay attention.

I?ve also decided I?ll give it a bit of a review when I?m done. It means that when somebody launches into an opinion starting with the line ?I haven?t read it, but?? I?ll be able to reply with slightly more insight than a rock. Because really, you can?t start out with a detailed opinion on something if your opening line is ?I haven?t read it, but??

You?d think that was in the Basic Book of Rules, but uninformed opinion is often the bedrock of humanity?s discussion of everything these days. I think I?d rather sit on the side of the fence with the people who investigated and thought about something a bit before leaping to a conclusion.

Now, before I talk about the book at all, I have to say this. One of the major criticisms from feminists, and women generally, is that 50 Shades paints a portrait of a dysfunctional, abusive relationship without clearly qualifying that such relationships are A Bad Thing for women. Unfortunately, they also add that this is a woman?s fantasy. Now, I?ve read Robin Ince?s Bad Book Club and as a result I know there is a book of women talking about their fantasies that included a woman who fantasised about being raped by a donkey. No, I?m not kidding you. Yes, I will wait while you go and find out more about that.

So let?s start by saying at least this massively popular book is not about a woman who wants to be raped by a donkey. Not that this is necessarily wrong. Fantasies, sexual or otherwise, are exactly that: they?re fantasies. I get the impression that both 50 Shades and Twilight, the book that inspired the series, are essentially fantasies created by the authors who wrote them. Would that I had such popular fantasies. Mine are all sadly non-sexual and largely dragon-based.

This is where I wade into difficult territory because a lot of angry women will shout at me saying I?m approving of rape, abusive relationships and domestic violence. I?ve not got that far along in the book, but apparently the relationship described is a violent one and goes beyond the bounds of what real life BDSM relationships are like. I?ve seen it claimed that this will somehow make domestic violence more acceptable, or that all women who?ve read 50 Shades will conclude that in real life, they want a Christian Grey who treats them the way he treats Anastasia.

I?m afraid I?d need evidence to prove that. I grew up on an odd combination of epic fantasy (Lord of the Rings etc) and horsey books. Based on my reading of fantasy, you?d think I?d have grown up thinking that there are only four women in the whole entire world, that one of them is a hobbit, and two of them are elves. I have no idea what I might have concluded from the horsey books, but it probably might end up worryingly close to the whole donkey thing.

I dislike this idea that women are such a blank canvas that we can?t make conclusions of our own about what we read. Amazingly enough, I can read books that don?t clearly state in capitals that what?s contained within might be Bad For Me, and not think that I must live my life in that way. I have a brain. As I understand it, we base most of our conclusions on what relationships are about from our parents and the people around us when we?re children.

In search of something that might give me an idea of what readers think, I had a look at the Amazon page for 50 Shades. At the moment of writing, there 4588 reviews on the site. 1477 are 1-star reviews, and 1954 are 5-star reviews. A glance at the 5-star reviews produced a lot of joke reviews, including a drinking game based on the repetitive nature of the language. I wouldn?t recommend it, because even at my current place in the book you?d need a new liver.

There are people who genuinely liked it. They were totally hooked, apparently. I?m not sure I can conclude from that they intend to go out and allow themselves to be abused by men. Many of the genuine reviews appear to be quite clear that they understand that this is a fantasy, and not an instruction manual. The word ?escapism? appears a lot.

I?m going to get a fuck-ton of stick (if anybody reads this) for not clearly being angry about domestic violence in all its forms. I am against domestic violence. I honestly think what we?re facing here is not a tide of idiot women fooled by a book into thinking rape is great but society maybe having to face the fact that we 1. have sexual fantasies; 2. those fantasies are weird and seem unhealthy in the cold light of day and 3. are able to distinguish between those fantasies and reality. I suspect a lot of the hoopla is down to the fact that women and what women think about often don?t chime with what critics and opinion-makers wish they were and thought about.

So now I?ve written over 1000 words trying to come up with a position on the book when I?ve only reached chapter four. I?ll have to start reviewing in the next post. Damn.

Gemini Observatory

Despite being infamously demoted from its status as a major planet, Pluto (and its largest companion Charon) recently posed as a surrogate extrasolar planetary system to help astronomers produce exceptionally high-resolution images with the Gemini North 8-meter telescope. Using a method called reconstructive speckle imaging, the researchers took the sharpest ground-based snapshots ever obtained of Pluto and Charon in visible light, which hint at the exoplanet verification power of a large state-of-the-art telescope when combined with speckle imaging techniques. The data also verified and refined previous orbital characteristics for Pluto and Charon while revealing the pair's precise diameters.

"The Pluto-Charon result is of timely interest to those of us wanting to understand the orbital dynamics of this pair for the upcoming NASA New Horizons mission to Pluto," said Steve Howell of the NASA Ames Research Center, who led the study. In addition, Howell notes that NASA's Kepler mission, which has already proven a powerful exoplanet discovery tool, will benefit greatly from this technique.

Kepler identifies planet candidates by repeatedly measuring the change in brightness of more than 150,000 stars to detect when a planet passes in front of, or affects the brightness of, its host star. Speckle imaging with the Gemini telescope will provide Kepler's follow-up program with a doubling in its ability to resolve objects and validate Earth-like planets. It also offers a 3- to 4-magnitude sensitivity increase for the sources observed by the team. That's about a 50-fold increase in sensitivity in the observations Howell and his team made at Gemini. "This is an enormous gain in the effort underway to confirm small Earth-size planets," Howell added.

To institute this effort Howell and his team which included Elliott Horch (Southern Connecticut State University), Mark Everett (National Optical Astronomy Observatory), and David Ciardi (NASA Exoplanet Science Institute/Caltech) temporarily installed a camera, called the Differential Speckle Survey Instrument (DSSI), among the suite of instruments mounted on the Gemini telescope.

"This was a fantastic opportunity to bring DSSI to Gemini North this past July," said Horch. "In just a little over half an hour of Pluto observations, collecting light with the large Gemini mirror, we obtained the best resolution ever with the DSSI instrument it was stunning!"

The resolution obtained in the observations, about 20 milliarcseconds, easily corresponds to separating a pair of automobile headlights in Providence, Rhode Island, from San Francisco, California. To achieve this level of definition, Gemini obtained a large number of very quick "snapshots" of Pluto and Charon. The researchers then reconstructed them into a single image after subtracting the blurring effects and ever-changing speckled artifacts caused by turbulence in the atmosphere and other optical aberrations. With enough snapshots (each image was exposed for only 60 milliseconds or about 1/20 of a second) only the light from the actual objects remains constant, and the artifacts reveal their transient nature, eventually canceling each other out.

DSSI was built at SCSU between 2007-2008 as a part of a United States National Science Foundation Astronomical Instrumentation grant and mounted on the Gemini North telescope for a limited observing run. The instrument is likely to return to Gemini North for observations in mid-2013 for general user programs from across the international Gemini partnership. Any such arrangement will be announced along with the call for proposals for Semester 13B, in February 2013.

Self-image and social interaction help to explain the link between exercise and mental health

We've heard it time and time again: exercise is good for us. And it's not just good for physical health research shows that daily physical activity can also boost our mental health. But what actually accounts for the association between exercise and mental health?

A new article in Clinical Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, explores whether certain psychosocial factors may help to explain the benefits of daily physical activity for adolescents' mental health.

Karin Monshouwer of the Trimbos Institute in the Netherlands and colleagues at Trimbos and VU University Medical Center specifically wanted to examine two existing explanations for the link between exercise and mental health. The self-image hypothesis suggests that physical activity has positive effects on body weight and body structure, leading to positive feedback from peers and improved self-image, and ultimately improving mental health. The social interaction hypothesis, on the other hand, holds that it's the social aspects of physical activity such as social relationships and mutual support among team members that contribute to the positive effects of exercise on mental health.

Monshouwer and her colleagues surveyed over 7000 Dutch students, ages 11 to 16. The adolescents completed validated surveys aimed at assessing their physical activity, mental health problems, body weight perception, and participation in organized sports. The researchers also gathered data on the adolescents' age, gender, and socioeconomic status; whether they lived at home with their parents; and whether they lived in an urban area.

The researchers found that adolescents who were physically inactive or who perceived their bodies as either "too fat" or "too thin" were at greater risk for both internalizing problems (e.g., depression, anxiety) and externalizing problems (e.g., aggression, substance abuse). Adolescents who participated in organized sports, on the other hand, were at lower risk for mental health problems.

Confirming both the self-image hypothesis and the social interaction hypothesis, adolescents' body weight perception (i.e., "too heavy," "good," or "too thin") and sports club membership each partially accounted for the relationship between physical activity and mental health, even after taking adolescents' backgrounds into account.

These results suggest that certain psychosocial factors body image and social interaction may help to explain at least part of the connection between physical activity and mental health. The researchers acknowledge, however, that other factors, such as the physiological effects of exercise, are probably also at work.

"We think that these findings are important for policymakers and anyone who works in healthcare or prevention. Our findings indicate that physical activity may be one effective tool for the prevention of mental health problems in adolescence," says Monshouwer.

Monshouwer and her colleagues hope that future studies will be able to examine similar questions while following participants over time. Such longitudinal studies could help researchers to understand how physical activity type and context might influence the relationship between exercise and mental health.

Coalgate figures may not be accurate, hints Chief Justice of India SH Kapadia -Dhananjay Mahapatra

    -The Times of India

Chief Justice of India (CJI) S H Kapadia on Saturday joined the debate on the CAG's estimate of "windfall gains" for private players in the coal block allocation scam, suggesting such assessments may not be accurate.

"People should be educated on economics as well to understand that these irregularities should be understood from the point of loss, which was a matter of fact, and not from profit angle, which was a matter of opinion", said the CJI, a remark which was lapped up by a government reeling under the charge that its failure to prevent coalgate helped private players fatten themselves by Rs 1.86 lakh crore.

"Valuation adopts very different criteria. If we understand these concepts properly, then we will know where the shoe pinches," the CJI added.

The government led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has questioned the comptroller and auditor general's estimate. The auditor has said that the government's failure to implement its own decision to auction coal blocks helped business houses walk away with the precious resources.

As soon as the CJI finished speaking, the remark was circulated by the government's PR mandarins.

The remark came a day after CAG Vinod Rai robustly defended his calculation before Parliament's Public Accounts Committee. Rai said that he would have failed in his duty he had not put a figure to the financial gains that, in auditor's estimate, accrued to private players.

Justice Kapadia also welcomed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's decisions for economic reforms but said the efforts to pull the economy out of woods would be meaningless if the well-connected continued to grab an unfair share of economic benefits. In what he called his "swan song" before he retires, the CJI said, "Our leaders must know that without rule of law, well connected people can grab an unfair share of the economic benefits which will affect inclusive growth."

Delivering his address before the PM, the CJI said rule of law never impeded economic growth and it must go hand in hand with the decisions taken by the government to attract foreign direct investment to lift the damp sentiment in the market and the manufacturing sector. He said one of the single most important factors for economic growth was the respect of the government for the rule of law, which enforced minimum standards of fairness and helped in improving the governance of the country.

He said an 8% GDP growth rate generated 12 million new jobs per year, but when the growth rate falls to 5.5% the employment generation dips to 8.25 million. "India has a 30 million youth population needing 10 million new jobs every year. If the growth rate falls than unemployment will increase. That's where the investment comes to bridge the gap," he said. "But be it domestic or foreign direct investment, I have always given importance to investment if it generates employment."

But he also cautioned the PM about the flip side of the reforms. "It should not be that 300 million prosper and 700 million suffer. That is why the need of the hour is the inclusive growth and economic democracy," the CJI said.

Justice Kapadia said he was in awe of the vision of Constitution framers as they had prescribed that natural resources be allocated to serve greater common good. This, in the present context, could mean economic democracy, which in the past meant inclusive growth. "In my view without this economic democracy political democracy would be imperiled," he warned.

He said the FDI was welcome but Indian labour laws should not get Americanized, which happened in Australia leading to a huge problem. "In India Americanization of labour laws would not happen as our laws are drive by the Constitution which has equity as the core principle," he added.

11-year-old wins $20,000 at AT&T hackathon for creating app that discourages texting while driving

AT&T's already working on an app to keep folks from texting while driving, but earlier this month it gave folks at a Los Angeles hackathon the chance to develop their own solution. David Grau, a creative director and designer at an interactive agency, and 11-year-old Victoria Walker were awarded $20,000 by Big Blue to bring their smartphone application to the public. Dubbed Rode Dog, the prize-winning software allows friends and family to organize themselves into "packs" and monitor their text messaging habits. Watchful users can spot when a fellow group member is texting and initiate a barking noise on the offender's phone. Much like squawking seat belt systems, the app is designed to remind drivers of their wrongdoing and doesn't stop the ruckus until they acknowledge it. If you'd rather have a chicken or other animal grab your attention, the duo crafted an in-app shop that offers other wildlife sound sound effects. Rode Dog isn't expected to hit iOS, Android and Windows Phone until its fully polished, but you can sign up to receive word of its launch at the second source link below.
