The Spiritual Damage in the Aftermath - The Institute's Safe ...

Page Branding Mask

There is no doubt that the wreckage from the pathological impacts you emotionally, physically, financially, sexually, and also spiritually. Everyone has a spirit?that God-shaped place in your soul that is touched and filled by beauty, awe, and stillness.? It?s the most authentic part of you so it?s also the most vulnerable and the most wounded from pathology.? Our souls were not created to be in the presence of pathology. They were created to be in the presence of love.

We were created for the touch of authentic love and for the connection to what is sacred. Pathology is not sacred. Whether you are ?religious? or not you were still created by the Sacred, for the Sacred, and to express the Sacred.? You were not created to express the aftermath of pathology. Aftermath symptoms should not feel ?at home? in your soul. They aren?t ?at home.?

Midway through the aftermath carnage you are probably feeling anything BUT a spiritual connection to anything. It?s no accident that pathology wounds at the soul level?that evil targets those with the most beautiful souls once full of infinite giving and over flowing grace.? Pathology/The Dark Side/Evil knows to dismantle your spirit is to unplug you from what made you the amazing gift you are. And to deflate the once full soul that was sharing love with others?the ultimate power on the planet?is to spiritually deflate our world.

But survivors often lament that recovery feels like a stand-still where you wait for restoration ?to arrive,? ?to ascend or descend,? ?to overtake you,? ?to fall gently? upon you.? The death blow to your soul by ?The Soul Slayer? is by far the worst damage. An inability to feel that God-shaped part is the worst numbness that a soul can experience. You look Heaven-ward praying for one flicker of a sense that your soul has survived the scourge of pathology.

Why isn?t God restoring me? Why do I still have the ?monkey-mind? of cognitive dissonance (He?s Good/He?s Bad)? Why is there no mental stillness?just a rush of adrenaline, the exhaustion of a mind running like an engine?

Sometimes our concept of recovery is replacement. That our feelings of loss will be replaced with joy, our lost pathological partner will be replaced with a healthier partner, our lost income that he stole will be replaced with a provision to get us through, our depression will be replaced with neurotransmitters. ?Replacement? recovery concepts are like a McDonald?s drive through. You read a book on pathology and try to simply replace mental concepts that got you in the relationship. You join a chat forum and try to replace loneliness with internet distraction.? It?s no wonder people are often confused about what recovery ?is? and when and how they will ?get there.?

But true authentic recovery that would touch the deepest part of you at a soul level is not about replacement. It?s about restoration?the restoring of the soul that guides your emotions, your choices, your capacity for joy, love and beauty. You can?t ?replace? a soul which is ultimately what has been damaged by the soul-less attack of pathology. But you can restore the ?seat? or the ?soul? of you from the carnage of darkness. In 25 years, we have seen the restoration over and over again.

I want to leave with hope that recovery IS possible. It just may not be how you have been thinking it will be, or how you have approached it, or as quick as you would like. It might not be just about reshaping your belief systems, or working through grief. The work may be deeper after all it?s your soul we are talking about.? The Institute exists to meet you where you are in your own recovery to offer restoration emotionally and spiritually where you need it through our online, tele-support, and face-to-face events. (As a reminder these products and services are listed on the magazine website.)

A few times a year we offer those face-to-face events through retreats.? In 2012 we reduced them to two a year which were in February and March. We have gotten a number of requests for one more retreat this year which we have organized and in which there is ONE remaining slot. The Healing the Aftermath of Pathological Love Relationships Retreat is Sept 2-7, 2012 in beautiful Brevard, NC the Land of the Waterfalls, 20+ hours of soul-healing group sessions, plus the restorational value of hiking, beauty, the forests, and waterfalls.? Application downloads are on the magazine website.

If you feel the recovery approaches you have been utilizing are not effective, do consider the retreats which have been used by dozens and dozens of women to bring rapid results to their cognitive dissonance, anxiety, and stress disordered symptoms.? I hope you will join us for the soul restoration you are craving.

Baby Koala Peeks Out Of Mom's Pouch At Taipei Zoo (VIDEO)

We can't get over this video of a baby koala from the Taipei Zoo peeking out of its mom's pouch.

According to National Geographic, a baby koala lives in the mother's pouch for around six months after it's born. After it ventures out into the world, he or she spends the next six months latched onto her belly or back.

ZooBorns reports that because there's still not much fur on this little joey, he or she most likely has a bit more time left in the pouch, "but limbs and snout will occasionally make an appearance."

Even though koalas are classified as being of "least concern" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, National Geographic reports that populations of the furry marsupials in Australia are decreasing due to habitat loss and degradation, disease, mining, and logging, to name just a few.

Can't get enough koala cuteness? Be sure to check out this video of Yabbra, the koala that wanders the halls of the Edinburgh Zoo.

Greece's debt woes put Europe on financial knife edge

AFP - Getty Images

Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, left, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso talk prior to a meeting of European Union leaders in Brussels on Wednesay. They are part of a larger group discussing the future of the euro zone.

By John W. Schoen, Senior Producer

Talk about a Herculean task. Or is it Sisyphean?

Europe's heads of state are meeting Wednesday to come up with a plan to jump-start the second largest economy in the world after painful austerity measures brought the euro zone?s growth to a dead stop.?

After two years of trying to jawbone away the fundamental problems, there?s little indication that the latest effort?will produce meaningful solutions.

Voters this month swept pro-austerity politicians out of office from Athens to Paris, and Europe?s leaders are running out of time to repair the widening cracks in an historic experiment with a common currency.

After the victors in this month?s Greek elections failed to form a government, Europe has threatened to cut off the country?s financial lifeline. Without the aid, the Greek government is just weeks away from running out of cash.

?It's a knife-edge situation,? said Roger Altman, co-founder of Evercore Partner and a former U.S. Treasury official. ?In theory, Greece should not exit the euro zone because that would usher in, I think, a very dark period in Greece where no one would lend to the country, the state couldn't meet its payroll, and it couldn't make all of the social benefit payments.?

On June 17, Greek voters go to the polls for the second time in a month to try to form a government. Without political leadership in Athens to enforce Europe?s mandated budget cuts, Greece will likely lose its financial lifeline and be forced to exit the euro pact.

Rumors are swirling in the financial markets that Greece could depart as early as this weekend, but that appears unlikely. For one thing, there is no government with the constitutional authority to create a new currency.

?Even if the heads (of state) did agree over coffee to show the Greeks the door, they would need to invent a constitutional basis for doing so? ... and there is none,? said Carl Weinberg, chief economist at High Frequency Economics. ?The (European Monetary Union) is by design like the Hotel California: countries come in but they never come out.?

But preparations are already underway for an event that was unthinkable to the architects of the common currency. In an hour-long teleconference on Monday, euro zone officials agreed that each country should draw up separate contingency plan to cope with the possible departure of Greece from the monetary union, two euro zone officials told Reuters.

A European Working Group made up of finance ministry representatives assessed the potential impact on member states. The group reportedly said?if Greece decides to leave, the European Union and International Monetary Fund are prepared to help it do so.

The blowback to the rest of Europe could be severe. The Greek central bank alone owes roughly 100 billion euros to other European central banks. Total external debt runs to more than 350 billion euros. ?

The meeting is expected to produce no major announcements or agreements, and the proposals?on the table have been?discussed for some time. Those include the creation of a common euro bond, setting aside a relatively modest amount of money for infrastructure projects, and allowing Europe?s central bank to backstop failing banks and government bailouts.

The last measure has been floated several times in the two years since Greece began sliding into its current debt morass. Europe?s central bankers argue that its mandate limits its capacity to offer the kind of sweeping backstops engineered by U.S. Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke after the financial panic of 2008. German officials are also staunchly opposed to expanding the ECB?s powers and show little signs of reversing that opposition.

The proposal to expand infrastructure investment, likely through an expanded program of guaranteed loans, is designed to provide an offset to the widely-repudiated ?austerity? measures that have been imposed on Greece, Spain and other countries looking for financial aid from European agencies and the IMF.

Such ?pro-growth? proposals have been given added momentum following the election of French President Francois Hollande, whose victory in the polls produced a seismic shift in the balance of power over the debt debate in Europe.

Hollande?s predecessor, Nicholas Sarkozy, offered critical support to German Chancellor Angela Merkel in her resolute insistence on holding Europe?s weaker members to promises to make?deep spending cuts. But?two years of austerity have brought the euro zone economy to a standstill.?Hollande took office with a mandate to put greater emphasis on growth.

The infrastructure?proposal?would raise roughly 230 billion euros to finance a variety of?projects. Even if approved relative quickly, the amount is widely considered too small to have any significant impact on the euro zone economy. And it does nothing to address the much wider impact caused by tighter credit across the continent as bankers hoard cash?to weather the ongoing financial storm.

There is also little on the table to solve the underlying problem of heavily indebted governments struggling to get out from under borrowing costs that are driving budget deficits higher. One solution being floated is to create a common euro bond, which would create a single interest rate for all euro zone?members issuing debt.

The euro bond idea has been discussed on and off for the last two years. Pooling government debt offerings would?effectively backstop bonds issued by Greece, Spain and Italy, thereby lowering the interests rates investors expect and reducing borrowing costs for Athens, Madrid and Rome.

The gap in borrowing costs has widened as the debt crisis has deepened. On Wednesday, as investors demanded rates above 6 percent for Spanish and Italian government debt, Germany floated a new round of two-year notes that offered investors zero?percent interest. Those investors, in effect, are willing to see no return in exchange for the perceived safety of bonds issued by Germany.

"There?s still a lot of uncertainty around," said?Gemma Godfrey, ?head of investment at Brooks McDonald. "And although rhetoric is obviously still very prevalent, a focus on actual practical plans is?missing."?

Fusing the debt of weaker euro zone countries to Germany in a common euro bond would raise Germany?s borrowing costs because investors would reprice all new euro bonds to reflect the added risk of a default by Greece, Spain or Italy.

Germans are loath to see their borrowing costs rise, let alone put their tax revenues at risk to guarantee the debt of other countries.?Merkel, reflecting popular?opinion expressed in recent local elections, remains steadfast in opposition to such a move.?

White supremacist gets 40 years for Ariz. bomb attack

J. Pat Carter / AP, file

White supremacist Dennis Mahon, given a 40-year sentence for a bomb attack, is seen here talking to journalists before appearing before the Oklahoma County Grand Jury investigating the Oklahoma City bombing.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

A white supremacist likely will spend the rest of his life behind bars after a federal judge sentenced him to 40 years in prison Tuesday for a 2004 bombing that wounded a black city official in suburban Phoenix.

Jurors in February convicted Dennis Mahon, 61, of three federal charges stemming from a package bomb that injured Don Logan ? Scottsdale's diversity director at the time ? and a secretary.

They stopped short of finding him guilty of a hate crime after a six-week trial that included dramatic testimony from Logan and a female government informant dubbed a "trailer park Mata Hari" by defense attorneys.

'Trailer park Mata Hari' case: White supremacist twins' bomb trial wraps up

In handing down the sentence, U.S. District Judge David Campbell said he believed the bombing was premeditated and done to promote an agenda of hate and racism.

He called it an "act of domestic terrorism."

Campbell defended the decision not to classify it as a hate crime. "The jury was never asked if this was a hate crime," he said, although they were asked to consider whether Logan was targeted because of his race, The Arizona Republic reported.

Ross D. Franklin / AP, file

The bomb sent by Mahon blew up in the hands of Don Logan, seen here in 2009.

"Mr. Mahon acted to promote racial discord," Campbell said, according to the Republic.

Logan told the Republic after the sentencing that he believed Campbell's comments meant it was essentially a hate-crime conviction.?"He didn't know me; all he hated was what I represented," Logan said.

Mahon, meanwhile, maintained his innocence, telling the crowded courtroom: "I didn't do this bombing."

He said he felt bad for the victims, "but I can't apologize for something I didn't do."

Mahon had faced between seven and 100 years in prison. Since there is no parole in the federal system, he likely will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

His identical twin brother, Daniel, also faced a charge in the case but was acquitted.

The package bomb detonated in Logan's hands on Feb. 26, 2004, in a Scottsdale city building.

Former stripper as informant
Prosecutors alleged the Mahon brothers bombed Logan on behalf of a group called the White Aryan Resistance, which they said encourages members to act as "lone wolves" and commit violence against non-whites and the government.

They showed surveillance tapes at trial of the brothers referring to Logan in racial slurs. They also played a voicemail that Dennis Mahon left at Scottsdale's diversity office just months before the bombing in which he angrily said: "The white Aryan resistance is growing in Scottsdale. There's a few white people who are standing up."

Defense attorneys said someone working for the city of Scottsdale was likely the perpetrator because Logan's job made him unpopular.

During Tuesday's hearing, Logan said he believes his skin color was the motivation for the attack. He told the judge that Dennis Mahon's actions warranted the maximum sentence.

"Don Logan didn't ask to be here. I am here by default. I am here for justice," Logan said. "Dennis Mahon does not deserve to be free."

During the trial, defense attorneys heavily criticized the use of 41-year-old Rebecca Williams as an informant, nicknaming her the "trailer park Mata Hari" ? a reference to the Dutch exotic dancer who was convicted of working as a spy for Germany during World War I.

Investigators met the former stripper through her brother, an informant himself on the Hells Angels motorcycle gang, and recruited her for the Mahon case, directing her to act like a government separatist and racist. She wore revealing clothes and sent racy photos to the brothers to win their trust.

'They got walloped': Masked group attacks alleged white supremacists in Illinois restaurant

Williams met the brothers in January 2005 after investigators set her up in a government-provided trailer at a Catoosa, Okla., campground where the brothers were staying at the time. A Confederate flag was placed in her window, and prosecutors say the Mahons introduced themselves within minutes of her arrival.

Dennis Mahon opened up to Williams as their conversations were recorded, telling her how to make bombs after she told him a fictitious story that she wanted to harm a child molester she knew.

In one conversation, she asked Mahon if he had ever successfully detonated a bomb, to which he replied: "Yeah, diversity officer."

Logan testified at trial about the unbearable pain he felt after he opened the package, describing the lights going out, the room filling with smoke and debris falling from the ceiling.

Logan, who now works as a diversity administrator in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale, was hospitalized for three days.

He needed four surgeries to remove shrapnel from his arm and hand, do a skin graft on his severely damaged forearm and restore some use to one of his fingers that nearly had to be amputated.

'Self-aggrandizing claims'?
Dennis Mahon's defense team has maintained his innocence, with his attorney Deborah Williams crying in court Tuesday and saying: "I don't believe Dennis Mahon has done this."

"He has not lived a good life in the way that most people would think of it," she said.

The defense attorneys argued their client "often makes exaggerated self-aggrandizing claims" that aren't true, that he was an alcoholic who constantly was drinking Everclear, and that his statements to Williams were just meant to impress her.

Mahon's lawyers also argued no evidence showed the bombing was done with the intent to seriously injure or kill Logan. They noted there were no deaths or life-threatening injuries from the bombing.

Prosecutors, who recommended a sentence of more than 60 years, said Dennis Mahon intended to send a political message in trying to kill Logan.

The Mahons were living in the Phoenix area at the time of the bombing but left days afterward and were arrested in 2009 in Illinois.

Dennis Mahon was found guilty of conspiracy to damage buildings and property by means of explosives; malicious damage of a building by means of explosives; and distribution of information related to explosives

Daniel Mahon was acquitted of conspiracy to damage buildings and property.

Leaks of papal documents are 'criminal,' Vatican charges : News ...

CWN - May 21, 2012

The Vatican has denounced the publication of secret papal documents as "a criminal act," after an Italian journalist launched a new book full of leaked correspondence.

Gianluigi Nuzzi, who helped to trigger a furor over secret Vatican memos when he exposed some documents in January, released his book His Holiness on May 19. The book consists of correspondence to and from Pope Benedict XVI.

"The Holy Father and a number of his collaborators, as well as the senders of messages addressed to him, have had their individual rights to privacy and freedom of correspondence violated," the Vatican said in an angry statement responding to the book's publication. The statement said that the public release of these confidential documents "no longer appears as a questionable--though obviously defamatory--journalistic initiative, but clearly assumes the characteristics of a criminal act."

The statement indicated that the Vatican would continue investigating the internal leaks, and could take legal action against those who published the documents.

The leaked documents obviously come from one or more Vatican officials with access to sensitive correspondence. Suspicions have centered on the Secretariat of State, especially since the leaked documents generally portray the Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, in an unfavorable light.

Pope Benedict has appointed a high-level commission, consisting of three retired cardinals, to investigate the source of the leaks. The latest embarrassing releases, and the heated Vatican response, show that the matter the Holy See now considers the issue a major concern.

Eurozone warned 'severe recession' looming

PARIS (AP) ? The 17-country eurozone risks falling into a "severe recession," the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development warned on Tuesday, as it called on governments and Europe's central bank to act quickly to keep the slowdown from dragging down the global economy.

OECD Chief Economist Pier Carlo Padoan said the eurozone economy could contract as much as 2 percent economic this year, a figure that the Paris-based think tank had laid out as its worst-case scenario in November.

In its twice-yearly global economic outlook, the OECD ? which comprises the world's most developed economies ? said its average forecast was for the eurozone economy to shrink 0.1 percent this year and grow a mere 0.9 percent in 2013.

"Today we see the situation in the euro area close to the possible downside scenario" in the OECD's November report, "which if materializing could lead to a severe recession in the euro area and with spillovers in the rest of the world," Padoan told reporters before the report's release.

The report forecasts Europe falling further behind other countries, particularly the United States, whose economy is expected to grow 2.4 percent and 2.6 percent, respectively.

"There is now a diverging trend between the euro area and the U.S., where the U.S. is picking up more strongly while the euro area is lagging behind," Padoan said.

Europe itself is increasingly split between a wealthier north continuing to grow and a southern rim that is sliding deeper into recession, the OECD figures show.

Germany, Europe's largest economy, will accelerate to 2 percent growth next year after 1.2 percent growth in 2012, while France, the eurozone's second-largest economy, will expand 1.2 percent next year after 0.6 percent growth this year, the OECD said.

Italy's economy, by contrast, will shrink 1.7 percent this year and 0.4 percent in 2013, the OECD forecast. Spain is also set to remain mired in recession, with contraction of 1.6 percent this year and 0.8 percent next.

Padoan called on eurozone leaders to adopt a "growth compact" to promote growth even while reducing deficits. French President Francois Hollande has made securing such a pact the focus of his European diplomacy in the first weeks of his administration.

So-called eurobonds ? debt issued jointly by countries in the currency bloc ? could be used to recapitalize banks, Padoan said. He also reiterated his call of six months ago for the ECB to do more to stem Europe's crisis.

The ECB has an "essential" role to play in solving Europe's crisis, Padoan said, both by using its balance sheet firepower to shore up banks and by lowering interest rates. The ECB should also consider renewing the "unconventional measures" it used last year such as buying up government bonds, "if there is need to cope with contagion problems," Padoan said.

Asian economies will also do better than Europe, the OECD predicted. Japan is forecast to grow 2 percent this year and slow down to 1.5 percent in 2013, while China is expected to accelerate from 8.2 percent to 9.3 percent.

Despite their growth downgrades for Europe, the OECD's figures are more optimistic than those of the International Monetary Fund. Last month the IMF predicted Europe's economy would shrink 0.3 percent this year, with the U.S. expanding 2.1 percent.

What to Expect When You?re Expecting is a classic example of what happens when you have a semi-interesting idea but then fail to execute it. Inspired by the best-selling nonfiction book that has sold over 35 million copies worldwide, the film features five couples who are faced with very different pregnancy situations.

TV fitness trainer Jules (Cameron Diaz) and her on-screen dance partner Evan (Matthew Morrison) end up fast-tracking their relationship when she discovers she?s pregnant.

Then we have the Cooper family: Wendy Cooper (Elizabeth Banks) and Gary (Ben Falcone) are ecstatic to find out she?s pregnant after trying for two years. However, Gary?s alpha dad, Ramsey (Dennis Quaid), and his much-younger trophy wife, Skyler (Brooklyn Decker), are also pregnant at the same time. Competition ensues when Wendy ends up having a difficult pregnancy while Skyler breezes through it on her 5-inch stilettos without gaining any weight.

And what would an ensemble film be without Jenny from the Block? Jennifer Lopez plays Holly, a photographer who is infertile and decides to adopt with her husband Alex (Rodrigo Santoro).

Chris Rock (L) and Rodrigo Santoro (R). (Melissa Moseley/ Lions Gate Entertainment)

Chris Rock (L) and Rodrigo Santoro (R). (Melissa Moseley/ Lions Gate Entertainment)

The final couple consists of the super-talented Anna Kendrick as Rosie, a food truck owner who ends up getting more than she wanted after a one-night stand with Marco (Chace Crawford).

What in the world are these couples doing in this movie? Well, while one can certainly appreciate the filmmakers? attempt to showcase the myriad of circumstances surrounding the ubiquitous question of whether one wishes to procreate, ultimately the film is unsuccessful in getting the audience to invest in these couples and their stories.

It feels like a careless salad bowl?a little bit of this, a dollop of that, a pinch of this. The components are thrown in but without enough care to really engage viewers, outside of a few empty laughs along the way (mostly from comic legend Chris Rock).

While certain ensemble films have worked very well?Traffic and Crash?some recent efforts such as Garry Marshall?s Valentine?s Day and New Year?s Eve have missed the mark by a mile as a result of the lack of attention to the storyline behind each character and, frankly, crowding the script with too many characters.

Unfortunately, What to Expect falls into the latter category.

For the pregnant women out there who are looking forward to seeing this one, my advice would be to keep your expectations very low.

House OKs $642 billion defense bill

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Ignoring a White House veto threat, the Republican-controlled House approved a $642 billion defense budget Friday that breaks a deficit-cutting deal with President Barack Obama and restricts his authority in an election-year challenge to the Democratic commander in chief.

The House voted 299-120 for the fiscal 2013 spending blueprint that authorizes money for weapons, aircraft, ships and the war in Afghanistan ? $8 billion more than Obama and congressional Republicans agreed to last summer in the clamor for fiscal austerity.

Insisting they are stronger on defense than the president, Republicans crafted a bill that calls for construction of a missile defense site on the East Coast that the military opposes, bars reductions in the nation's nuclear arsenal and reaffirms the indefinite detention without trial of suspected terrorists, even U.S. citizens captured on American soil.

The divisive GOP provisions will have a short shelf life, as the Democratic-controlled Senate is likely to scrap many of them and stick to the spending level in the deficit-cutting agreement.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta met privately last week with senators to argue for the president's proposed budget, a blueprint the Pentagon says is based on a new military strategy focused on Asia, the Mideast and cyberspace as the nation emerges from two long wars. The Senate Armed Services Committee crafts its version of the budget next week.

The House bill is not only a political salvo against Obama, who nevertheless gets high marks after the killing of Osama bin Laden and success in the war on terrorism, but a reflection of the stranglehold the defense industry has on Congress. Weapons, aircraft carriers and jet fighters mean jobs back home, and lawmakers are loath to cut funds for the military, the biggest government program outside entitlements like Medicare and Social Security.

In a political shot on the House floor, Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., chairman of the Armed Services Committee, accused Democrats of "taking all of the jobs out of the military."

For the endless Washington talk of dealing with the nation's debilitating debt, the bill outlines a base defense budget of $554 billion, including nuclear weapons spending, plus $88 billion for the war in Afghanistan and counterterrorism efforts.

Conservative and tea party Republicans prevailed on a series of amendments Friday, even dealing a blow to the business community and GOP establishment on one measure. Reviving Cold War arguments, they rejected the notion that Senate ratification of an arms control treaty with Russia in December 2010 has long been settled and that the president has the authority to enforce the pact. Their words of warning about Russia echoed those of likely Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

The House soundly backed amendments prohibiting the president from making unilateral reductions to the U.S. nuclear arsenal and imposing limits on the ability of the administration to cut the stockpile.

"The United States should not wander down the road toward nuclear disarmament because President Obama has pinned his hopes on a belief that other nations will blindly follow our lead," said Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., sponsor of one of the amendments.

Republican Rep. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming called the U.S.-Russia treaty that was ratified on a 71-26 Senate vote "a terrible deal for the United States."

"This is a mess we are trying to clean up," Lummis said.

Democratic Rep. Rob Andrews of New Jersey failed to sway his colleagues with the argument that careful and deliberate elimination of nuclear weapons has been a bipartisan effort by presidents from Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush to George W. Bush and Obama.

In one of the most telling votes about the fractures within the GOP, the House rejected appeals from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the business community, traditional Republican allies, and backed an amendment limiting funds for institutions or organizations established by the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea. The vote was 229-193.

The chamber supports Senate ratification of the Law of the Sea Treaty "because it would provide clear legal rights and protections to American businesses to transit, lay undersea cables, and take advantage of the vast natural resources in and under the oceans off the U.S. coasts and around the world," executive vice president R. Bruce Josten said in a statement. He noted that the Defense Department supports the treaty.

Tea party Republicans and other conservatives have expressed concerns about the treaty impinging on U.S. sovereignty.

The detention issue created an unusual political coalition in Congress, uniting Democrats and some tea party Republicans.

Conservatives fear the divisive policy established last year could result in unfettered power for the federal government and trample long-held constitutional rights. The policy, contained in the current defense law, was based on the post-Sept. 11 authorization for the use of military force that allows indefinite detention of enemy combatants. Several Democrats criticized the provision as an example of government overreach and an unnecessary obstacle to the Obama administration's war against terrorism.

The policy denies suspected terrorists, including U.S. citizens seized within the nation's borders, the right to trial and subjects them to the possibility they would be held indefinitely.

When Obama signed the bill on Dec. 31, he issued a statement saying he had serious reservations about provisions on the detention, interrogation and prosecution of suspected terrorists. Such signing statements are common and allow presidents to raise constitutional objections to circumvent Congress' intent.

"My administration will not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens," Obama said in the signing statement. "Indeed, I believe that doing so would break with our most important traditions and values as a nation."

In February, the administration outlined new rules on when the FBI, rather than the military, could be allowed to retain custody of al-Qaida terrorism suspects who aren't U.S. citizens but are arrested by federal law enforcement officers. The new procedures spelled out seven circumstances in which the president could place a suspect in FBI, rather than military, custody, including a waiver when it could impede counterterrorism cooperation with another government or when it could interfere with efforts to secure an individual's cooperation or confession.

The House rejected an amendment by Reps. Adam Smith, D-Wash., and Justin Amash, R-Mich., that would have barred indefinite detention and rolled back mandatory military custody. The vote was 238-182.

"To give the president the power to take away a person's freedom and lock them up, potentially simply based on allegations, without due process, and without the civil liberties protected by our Constitution, is an extraordinary step," Smith said.

In a face-saving move, the House voted 243-173 Friday for an amendment that reaffirms Americans' constitutional rights.

A Democratic effort to stick to last year's deficit-cutting pact and cut $8 billion from the bill failed Friday on a 252-170 vote.

Bird-like robo-plane avoids obstacles in an urban jungle

6 hrs.

A robotic plane with the moves and speed of birds, and relies on its own senses to?deftly dart between a city's?skyscrapers, street lights and power lines, has taken a big step closer to reality.

The plane, technically called a micro air vehicle, was revealed Wednesday at a robotics conference. It?flies without the assistance of external GPS or motion tracking?? crutches employed by previous systems designed to tackle the problem of autonomous flying through urban environments.

Instead, the system, led by Adam Bry in MIT's Robust Robotics Group,?uses an onboard inertial measurement unit???a system of gyros and accelerometers that determine things such as velocity and orientation ? as well as a laser range finder and a pre-existing 3-D map of its environment to accomplish the feat.

The result is demonstrated in the video above, which Bry played during his paper?presentation at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation.

While setting a flying robot free in an underground parking garage is certainly an impressive feat, the?IEEE Automation blog notes that the requirement for a pre-existing map programmed into the robot?s system prevents this thing from being set free in terra incognita.

Still, though, flying robots are approaching the skill of flying birds, which might bode well for military planners interested in sending robotic off to battle in the next big urban war.

Facebook IPO: Stock Falters, Still Raises $16 Billion

Call it the most disappointing $16 billion raised in investment history.

Facebook stock is off to a rocky start after its highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO), jumping more than 10 percent in the first few minutes of trading before sellers swept into the market and that gain evaporated.

“The stock is trading right at the IPO price,” one expert told the L.A. Times. “They didn’t want that in a million years. A traditional IPO is up 10% or 15%.”

Zuckerberg Rings Bell

The stock most recently hovered at about $40, only $2 above what shares were priced at late Thursday. Shares touched $38 multiple times during trading.

Investors also had to deal with a nearly three-hour delay for the stock to open. The Nasdaq kept the stock halted as it processed a crush of buy and sell orders.

The inauspicious opening after the Facebook IPO suggests that retail investors paid close attention to reports of soft financials and big selling by insiders.

Still, Facebook raised $16 billion in what will go down as the third-largest public offering in U.S. history and the biggest ever for a technology company.

Could be worse, right? Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg rang the Nasdaq opening bell from company headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif.

Eduardo Saverin, one of the company's co-founders, made news this week by giving up U.S. citizenship as a means of limiting his tax liability.

Facebook debut is modest, high volumes cause problems

By Alexei Oreskovic

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc shares rose less than expected on their first day of trade on Friday and huge order volume caused technical problems that marred the coming out party of the No. 1 online social network.

Its shares were up 8 percent in early afternoon trading on the Nasdaq, after opening 11 percent higher and then rapidly heading south to touch their initial public offering price of $38. The gains were below market forecasts of as much as a 50 percent jump.

"We have got some unhappy guys out there," said Wayne Kaufman, chief market strategist at John Thomas Financial, a retail broker on Wall Street. "They were hoping for Facebook to be considerably better. I bet there are a lot of disappointed people in the market."

Facebook, which has about 900 million users globally, priced its IPO at the top end of its target range, becoming the first U.S. company to go public with a valuation greater than $100 billion. If a greenshoe option to underwriters is exercised, Facebook will raise as much as $18.4 billion by selling an 18 percent stake, the second-biggest IPO in U.S. history after the one by Visa Inc.

Analysts blamed the poorer-than-expected first-day showing on the vast number of shares floated and market weakness. General Motors' decision to pull paid-advertising from the social network, announced this week, also hurt.

After a delay in the opening print that drove up anxiety levels among traders and onlookers outside the Nasdaq, the closely watched stock began trading at $42.05, rose to as high as $45 and then rapidly retreated. The Nasdaq exchange said it was investigating an issue with execution of trades.

Facebook's IPO had been heavily oversubscribed, particularly by retail investors, despite concerns about slowing growth in the last quarter, whether the company can make money from mobile advertising, and the immense control Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has over on the company.

Others warned that the IPO price, equivalent to over 100 times historical earnings versus Apple Inc's 14 times and Google Inc's 19 times, makes Facebook a risky bet.

EARLY FANFARE

For Facebook, Friday began with much fanfare. To rapturous applause from employees, Mark Zuckerberg -- flanked by Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and Nasdaq Chief Executive Robert Greifeld -- rang the bell to kick off trading at the company's Silicon Valley headquarters at 6:30 a.m. Pacific time.

The 28-year-old billionaire founder, wearing his trademark black hoodie, hugged and high-fived Sandberg and other employees in celebration after he pressed the remote button.

The area outside Facebook's offices was packed with throngs of photographers, more than a dozen television trucks, and a TV news helicopter hovering overhead as the excitement reached fever pitch.

The fizzling of Facebook's early gains put pressure on other social media stocks. Zynga, which depends on Facebook for much of its revenue, dived 13 percent before it was halted. LinkedIn Corp was off 3 percent at midday.

"When you see what's happening with other social media stocks today, which are significantly down, as well as looking at Facebook trading flat, we think it has traded obviously at the high end," said Destination Wealth Management CEO Michael Yoshikami.

"It's a rich valuation, particularly given the advertising pressure they're under now. Advertising revenue has grown significantly slower over the past few years, and that's punctuated by GM's decision to stop advertising on Facebook."

"We're not buyers at $38, particularly considering that most of their business is in mobile and they haven't figured out how to make money yet."

FXI Cotton Candy ICS-on-a-stick gets May release date, sweetened design

Is that an Ice Cream Sandwich riding shotgun atop your Cotton Candy stick? It may sound like a delicious carnival delight, but munching on this bad boy will send you to the hospital faster than a family pack of deep-fried Oreos. Keeping up the confection theme, FXI has coined the treat in question as Cotton Candy, and we got our first taste of the refresh back in February at Mobile World Congress, where we went hands-on with the bite-size computer-on-a-stick. FXI reps promised a March ship date at that point, but the refreshed model appears to have been worth the wait, with a 1.2GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor, quad-core ARM Mali-400MP graphics and support for Android 4.0 and Ubuntu, along with embedded virtualization clients for Windows, Linux and Mac.

There's a gig of DRAM on board -- up to 64GB of storage will come in the form of a bring-your-own microSD card. There's a 1080p-ready HDMI port at one end of the 3-inch stick and a USB 2.0 connector on the other side, along with a female micro-USB port for peripheral connectivity. Customers with pre-orders in Scandinavia (FXI is based in Norway) should expect their $199 Cotton Candy devices by the end of the month, while those in the rest of the world (including the US of A) will need to hang tight until the end of the summer. There's a MWC-era hands-on awaiting you just past the break.

Rogers preparing for launch of the Samsung Galaxy S III

Samsung Galaxy S III

Remember a few days ago when an ad for Rogers popped up, seemingly to proclaim their version of the Samsung Galaxy S III would come with the Exynos processor and LTE? Well, we still don't have a definitive answer on whether or not the ad was accurate but we do know now that we're at least one step closer to finding out.

A news bulletin has been sent out to Rogers employee's letting them all know the obvious and confirmed -- the Samsung Galaxy S III is coming to Rogers very soon. Needless to say, we'll keep digging for clarification which shouldn't take too much longer now that Rogers is relaying information internally.

Nokia Reading opens its pages to select European nations, more to follow

Nokia's not shy when it comes to decorating the Lumia halls with proprietary and partnership apps. The latest addition? That Nokia Reading app we first saw announced at MWC. Owners of Lumia 900, 800, 710 and 610 phones in France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain and the UK will be able to get their thumbs amidst those digital pages over the next few weeks, while unspecified "other" countries can look forward to it some time later in the year. Espoo is keen to point out that there'll be an emphasis on "own language" titles, but also a large collection of English language best sellers for which translations aren't available. It's just the written word for now, but audio books and news feeds will be introduced later. Let's just hope you finish reading The Color Purple by then.
